I am in the process of upgrading as well, I liked the look of the i5 6500 or 6600/k and have read nothing but positive reviews. Got help from some others members on the LTT forums and decided on most likely the 6600k for myself. For you with a 960 I would recommend the i5 6500.

i5 6500: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/TJ43hM

If you want something with the ability to overclock the 6600k is a very nice option that is pretty much $100 less than the 6700k.

i5 6600k: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/V8Z4Hx

If you want a CPU that is very good and will probably last you for at least four years (not saying the others wont)  than the i7 6700 would be another good option.

i7 6700: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/tsBRNG

The mobo and Ram are the same in all of the builds, but could be changed out for any other board with an 1151 socket. Exception on the 6600k though, as you would want a z170 mobo to have full potential of overclocking capability.

I just upgraded to a GTX 970 and i5 6600k and I'm pretty happy.

That is awesome! Which cooler did you get on your cpu? Also, have you overclocked it at all, how has that gone?

I'm using the deep cool gammaxx 400.  I haven't overclocked yet because I'm saving up for the corsair h100i v2 extreme.

does the 6500 still overclock pretty good?

I don't think it overclocks.  But I could be wrong.

Ahh I understand. What caused you to go with the 6600k instead of the 6700 non k?

Recommendations and the price difference.

yeah then isnt it pretty bad if it cant overclock because its only 3.2 ghz and the i3 i have right now is 3.7 so how will it be better?

Core structure is always a factor.

so ghz dont really have much to do with it?

They do, but the two CPUs are built totally different so the slightly lower Ghz, better quality core structure CPU, would be better.  If we were talking about skylake vs. Haswell-e/Broadwell-e, it would be a different story.

Oh ok I couldn't find your CPU anywhere.  But the sixth gen i7s are better than 3rd gen i3s.  Don't worry. It will be a significant upgrade.
