So I have a 1070 Strix coming in on Monday and since ordering it I've heard that the cooling isn't good and gets out performed. While I've never seen any benchmarks showing such thing, it's claimed by many.

I'm not sure if it's just people scarred from Asus' customer service, but benchmarks seems fine. My question is, should I keep it or return it and go for something like the Gigabyte Xtreme or Gaming X?

It should be fine. Test it yourself and find out if it works for what you want. The best cooling on cards this generation seem to be from MSI and Zotac.

Even the Founders cooler can keep up fine with the 1070. Yes other coolers are better but this card is just 150watts TDP so it really doesn't matter nearly as much as with a high TDP card like the 290x or the 780ti back in those days it actually did matter a whole lot.
