working on upgrading pc, my current power supply has a  4 pin power cable connected to the 8 pin port where the motherboard has its eps ports, would it be okay if i upgrade to a bigger psu and get one that has 8 ports? or will there be a risk of damaging my components?

The power supply will only deliver the required current requested by the component. You can use an eight pin cable to provide the opportunity for the CPU to request extra current if required, and it won't hurt anything. The power supply won't send more current than what's requested by the component - well it shouldn't anyways if it's worth its salts.
