This is a little off topic, but I know there used to be several companies that used to do custom video card drivers. Since the nvidia driver doesn't slow 3 and 4-way sli for the 1080's or 1070's. Would it be possible for a company to create a driver that could "unlock" these features?

You can probably force SLI with NVIDIA Inspector.

Its not supported for gaming, but only for benchmarks. Nvidia is only going to officially support 2way SLI for gaming and then its up to the game developers to code support for it in their games.
