Which CPU to upgrade to

Go to solution Solved by Yuiry,

Hey guys,

So I am looking to upgrade my current Mobo, Processor, and Ram, but I am not sure with what processor to go with.

Currently, my processor is an i7 4790k Devils canyon with an AsRock z97x Mobo, and I am going to gift that to a friend for his birthday.

I want to jump to at least a 6 core processor as I do alot of video editing and would like the hyper-threading of an i7.

Do you guys have any suggestions on Skylake or Broadwell, and which i7 I should be looking at (preferably a K model unless intel really does lock down overclocking)

Was eyeballing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117649

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

Brian

I would get the 5930K, or 5820K. The new broadwell - e line is way over priced, and has very minimal performance gain (and doesn't overclock well).

First things first.

Price range.

How much are you willing to pay for the processor alone?

How much are you willing to pay for a new motherboard to work with it.

How much are you willing to pay for new RAM and how much.

Price isn't an issue here. But I think 16gb is what id shoot for.

the 5930K Haswell seems to cost more than the Broadwell version, and the Broadwell does have slightly higher benchmarks it seems, I do want to upgrade to an x99 system.

That processor is what I think ill go for. No need for the watercooler as I have an H105 w all the mounting hardware still for 1151 (I should check, lol)

Noticing Skylake, and Broadwell. are both 2011-3, So I may need a new water cooler. And Skylake is EXPENSIVE, so may stick with Broadwell

The mobo is a bit overkill, I may tone that down a bit if possible.

Thanks Yuiry <3
