they are quite cheap

Eh hard drives aren't known for being particularly sturdy but as long as you don't overstress them you could get a good 4 maybe 5 years at least

Well I'd never have any Seagate or Samsung HDD (even really old ones fail on me). But let me tell you, put 8 WD greens in a row and they will be dead within 2 years (my experiences)...

 

BTW I saw some Seagate HDD datasheets to have row with information about how many disc are recommended beside each other in one machine (but it was probably enterprise lineup)

The thing I would be worried about is vibrations. Vibrations from other drives are always the cause of death. I would say focus on getting NAS drives that candle vibrations.
