I'm buying a Lenovo t460s and am looking for cheaper alternatives to upgrade the machine than using their configurator ($60 for a single 4GB stick of ddr4 sodimm really?). I've already solved the RAM issue since there's an empty sodimm slot behind the single screw maintenance hatch, but while the upgrade videos show how to replace the SSD in this video, I have no idea how to clone the data from the 128GB included SSD to a 256GB SSD I would just buy off of Amazon (that would include moving over Windows too of course). How would I do this? What would I need? Step by step instructions would be very much appreciated, thank you! :)

Get a USB to SATA that includes power to connect the second SSD and then just use some cloning software that works with Windows.

Does a 2.5" cable that works for that? And would there be any software you would recommend? I pretty much don't know anything so I would really appreciate details

1. Yes

2. Acronics if the manufacturer of the second SSD doesn't have one.

Just to make sure, this one? https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-5-25-INCH-Converter-Activity-USB-DSC9/dp/B00DQJME7Y

Also, this is the SSD type that Crucial says would be compatible http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/thinkpad-t460s/CT8217120

For the cable, if you choose the one for USB 3.0 to SATA should be fine, plus it saves you some cash. The SSD should be able to use any M.2 form factor SATA SSDs, my personal favourite is the Samsung 850 EVO.

Okay cool thanks guys! But if you don't mind my asking, what's wrong with the one that I suggested? Is it just the wrong cable? :P

I just realized this was about an m.2 SSD, woops. You would actually have to use something like this. https://www.amazon.com/ZTC-Enclosure-Adapter-SuperSpeed-ZTC-EN004-BK/dp/B00KQ4LNJC

Nothing is wrong, but it includes IDE and what not, which most people nowadays won't need, and choosing the USB 3.0 to SATA one saves you some cash.

Oh shit wait, if you're replacing a M.2 SSD, the procedure is different, you will require a M.2 to USB 3.0 enclosure.

Oh ripperino okay xD

But since the upgrade would be ~$130 anyway and (from what I can gather) they use a samsung ssd anyway I think I'll just do the RAM by my self and let the factory do the SSD stuff. Thanks for the info though :)
