Can i run an r9 390 gpu on a 550 psu i was ordering my new pc parts apart from the gpu and wondered if i could run a r9 390 on the psu i ordered which is a cooler master g550m. Can i use a 390 or should i get a 970 (i dont feel like waiting for prices to drop on the new cards due to the price gouging) i want something from either the 300 amd series of cards or nvidia 900 series of cards.

I would go for an Nvidia card if you have a 550w psu. It should be enough for both, but the 300 series from amd draws alot of power. If i were you, i would look for a cheap 980Ti. Buying a 970 now, is a little "meh". Better alternatives are present, and saving up for a rx 480 or a gtx 1070 i would consider the best option for you if you dont find a cheap 980Ti.

Intel Core i7 6700K@4,3GHz - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming - Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 - Evga SuperNova 750W PSU - Samsung EVO 500GB SSD - Gainward GTX 1080 GS - BenQ xl2411T 144hz - Cooler Master Haf-X Big Tower Nvidia Edition

Uhuh. The 980 ti is not as efficient as you think. Running a 980 ti off a 550w psu is just as risky.

Maybe you are right. But i would go with a 980Ti over a 390 now as you can get them cheap.

Not 390 cheap. So it depends on the budget.

True that. But i think investing a little ekstra(does not mean like gtx 1080 extra) in a good graphics card that will last for a while is the best think to do. A used 980Ti is the best value you get for a cheap price.
