Recommended CPU

I plan to run either a 1080 or 1070 but my current AMD FX-8350 would bottleneck it. I want to know what would be a good step up from it. 
I'd prefer an AMD CPU since I don't want to have to replace my mobo for a different socket so that I can use Intel.

AMD has nothing better than what you have.

You have no choice but to go with intel or cross your fingers and wait for Zen.

If you wanted an AMD processor, either get an FX 9590 or wait for the zen to see what it will have.

I would like to spend about 250-300 
350 is ok by that is kind of stretching it

It does open a new upgrade path, as you're effectively at the end of piledriver. You could wait for zen and see what that holds.

 

In gaming applictions, (as most use a max of 4 cores) the i5 has a better single core performance and quad core performance.

the old ass AMD FX-9590 won't stand a chance against the i5-6600K...the core i5 has greatly superior single-threaded performance and overall similar multi-threaded throughput so it's faster across the board it's a MUCH MUCH MUCH better processor especially in a gaming environment.

the page won't even load here and i don't care what is written on it the core i5-6600K has 66% greater per core performance vs the old outdated FX POS...do the math.

I plan to re-use my ram sticks and cooler but i didn't plan to sell my Cpu and Board.

If you can, I would overclock the FX-8350. There is no cost in overclocking and the FX-9590 is essentially a factor overclocked FX-8350. That may hold you off til Zen comes out, then you can make a decision between Zen or the new Intel stuff.

If you don't have a good enough motherboard or psu you might want to place a phone call to your local fire department first. 

 

An i5 6500 with a h170 board is the minimum that I would recommend for a 1080, a h110, and 6400 would be alright though, or get a i5 4690 if you want to keep your ddr3.

Yeah but once you oc the 6600k the 8350 really doen't have a chance even running at 5GHz.

Once you overclock both, the delta drops to 6% from 12%, which is why I gave the 6-12% figure in the first place.

Give up on your hopes and dreams of a 1080 or 1070 with your AMD CPU. Set your sights much lower unless you are prepared to upgrade to an Intel I5 or I7 processor.

yeah but modern games nowadays generally use between 3 and 6 CPU threads...most of them being somewhat light and the bulk of the processing still being done on only 2 or 3 main threads...and the overall performance still greatly and mostly depend on your single-threaded performance...so a good quad-core CPU with great IPC is all you need for a good gaming rig.

 

The FX-8350/9590 or whatever would do good in a server, or to run multiple virtual machines, or a machine dedicated purely to rendering and transcoding video files for example, or compressing large datafiles. But for gaming, even the last gen i5-4590 will beat the FX-9590 probably in 10 games out of 10. (if ANYONE want to argue this go ahead and google me some benchmarks in which ANY AMD CPU beat an intel i5 from sandy-bridge and up in GAMING...don't waste your time you won't find any i've tried already and there is NONE)
