1070 Founders vs after market

Lightswitch77

So i made a post a few days ago which i posed a question, 980 ti vs 1070 FE. Most people answered 1070 but just not the FE. i know that the after market cards are a bit better (as in better cooling and such) and they cost less than the FE in the US but here in Iceland the after market cards cost more than the FE.

So my question now is: Why is the FE card so much worse? that i'm not supposed to buy it over the others?

BTW, the cheapest after market card here is the MSI Aero (25-ish dollars more) , is that any good? then after that there's the MSI Armor(50-is dollars more).

It runs very hot and loud. To the point where a 980 Ti would handily outperform it.

Nvidia's reference cards used to be the bottom line price point and now they are amongst the top. It's not really fair but that's what it came to. While many aftermarket cards will cool better and quieter, that doesn't mean that the FE cooler is literally the bottom line. It's on par with cards like the MSI Aero, while being of better quality if you ask me. I got the FE beacuse I needed a blower cooler for my case and didn't want the cheap plastic coolers from ther companies. It's been great so far.

Will an MSI 980 ti Gaming X outpreform the 1070 FE? Or the MSI 170 Aero/Armor

Is that why mine stays below 80 in a poorly ventilated itx build and manages a 2035 MHz overclock?

The issue with the Flamethrower Edition is that it is both overpriced and thermally and power-limited. The single 8-pin is not enough for any real OC and the thermal headroom is next to none. A high-end 980 Ti like that would demolish it

Depends on the PSU. A decent 500W is enough but a cheap 700W would still be a risk

depends on how much you oc. FE should be able to reach 2100mhz even with the blower fan, while aftermarket cards seem to be having trouble oc that high. however, if you oc it enough, a good 980 ti will beat out any 1070

2100Mhz on a FE would require extreme fan speeds.

It's the same overpriced shitty blower cooler. It's not meant to handle anything beyond stock and thus 980 Tis walk all over it. The 1080 FE actually overheats

The problem with reference cards is that they run very hot and very loud. That makes overclocking more difficult and less enjoyable. Here in Germany, the aftermarket cards are more expensive as well but I would definitely recommend on buying an aftermarket card. As for the question whether you should buy a 980ti or a 1070 I would go for the 1070 since it delivers the same if not better performance for roughly the same price and at lower power consumption. Which card you buy depends on your budget. the more expensive cards use better coolers and custom PCBs with more power phases for better OC performance. I wouldn't recommend going with the Aero since that also uses a blower style cooler which tends to get loud and hot just like the reference one. The Armor does feature an internal exhaust cooler which should be able to give you much more satisfying thermals and acoustics. If you want to get fancy you could go for something like the Gaming X from MSI or the FTW from EVGA since these feature the aforementioned custom PCBs which should result in better overclocking. I just bought my MSI 1070 Gaming X yesterday and am super happy with it.

You have no real choice in the matter. Nvidia GPUs auto-OC themselves - that feature causes the FE to run at 80-85*C constantly as the frequency dynamically adjusts to offer the most performance while pushing the hardware as far as possible. the 1080 FE cooler cannot keep up and thus it ends up throttling to base

Get the cheapest AF 1070 or the cheapest AF 980 Ti. Honestly, performance is similar but if the 980 Ti is 100$ less then there is absolutely no reason to buy the 1070 unless you are doing VR.

I understand your concerns, mate but you definitely should look into OCing. If you don't mess around with any settings in your OC tool like voltage control (which is locked anyways on 1070s at the moment) you CAN NOT break anything on your card. The worst thing that can happen is that  a game or benchmark crashes due to instability. If that happens, just dial those clock speeds down. If it's your first time I'd recommend following an OC guide like this one by JayzTwoCents:

Either way you should really OC your GPU since it's free performance and it's basically risk-free (to a certain extend)

Risk-free as long as he doesn't let the temps get too high (which is a problem on FE) and doesn't touch voltage :)
