Your friend was probably referring to the brief lack of multiplayer support in Borderlands 1 after Gamespy shut down. Gamespy provided the servers which were used for the coop portion of the game. Borderlands 1 has since been updated to use steamworks for its multiplayer support. All the borderlands games currently use steamworks for their coop servers and there are not currently any plans to shut down those servers.
