Steam/Emulation/Media Console killer build??

I need some ideas and opinions on my build... I want to stay below the $1000 range when it comes to price and I want to have an m-itx form factor so it can be hauled around when I have potential LAN parties with friends

this build will be used with emulators like dolphin, ppssxx (or whatever the ps1 emulator is named), the ps2 emulator, ppsspp, some kind of mame emulator, fightcade, and others that I don't have on the mind at the moment

I want to use media apps like kodi/xbmc, plex, netflix, and my own dvds and of course steam for my pc gaming needs so suggestions on how I can make my build better while staying below the limit will be appreciated

Well, if it was just for emulation I would say the Pentium G3258 all the way. When overclocked it has the same performance (In emulators) as the overclocked i7's. However, since you also want to game on it, I recommend putting a bit more money into a nicer CPU and Motherboard. A 6500k followed by a Z170 motherboard should still keep you under $1k, and would provide much better future proofing with the ability to overclock. Everything else seems pretty solid for the most part.

That's a nice choice for a LAN rig, I don't really see anything that would hold you back for a couple of generations (current trend considered).

I would personally consider a CPU upgrade, to eek a few more years out of it, but that is up to you.

well most games run at an i5 so, I could get 3-4 years out of it before I need to upgrade

I suggest a i5 6500k. Not a huge price increase, and the option to overclock will help a LOT in more cpu bound games.

Note: You will need a nicer cooler before you can OC (a small 120mm AIO would do nicely) but that can be added when needed.

Overclocking isn't a great idea in such a small enclosure, heat becomes more of an issue

A liquid cooler should be fine... Pretty sure his case can support at least a 120mm AIO. As long as it is positioned as exhaust, the heat numbers should be fine at a modest OC

An i5, yes, but you're using the minimum required cpu for Occulus. Consider upgrading to at least a 6500

what's wrong with using the minimum requirement for the oculus???

Just for the record though, you should check that your case can indeed support a 120mm radiator. Also, keep in mind how thick the radiator is other wise it might have clearance issues. Good luck with the build =)

If you're interested in VR, I would go with the HTC Vive. The motion controls are very good and games are easy to set up.

Well, nothing technically. But that minimum could change. It is usually a better idea to buy a CPU that is a little bit better than what you think you need, just in case. That way you will

a.) Get better performance

b.) Will be able to stay current longer

c.) Give your self a little bit of headroom

I'll go with the i5-6500k and wait for the future to upgrade.

I think that is a good plan. I've also heard rumors that Kabby Lake (or whatever the heck they call it) will release on the same 1151 socket as Sky Lake, so you should have a pretty solid upgrade tree to look forward to.
