Over Heating GPU

So, a friend of mine decided to over clock his EVGA GTX 970 SC.  He wasn't very careful and it caught on fire.  

 

Good news is that it will still boot up to the desktop, bad news that it idles at 60c.

 

My guess that when it over heated to the point of it catching on fire it dried up the thermal paste and new paste needs to be applied in order to fix it from over heating.  

 

Anyone else got any suggestions or input on this?  Is there still a chance that I can fix it?  Or is he just out of luck?

What did he change so much he got it to catch on fire? What did he use to overclock that let it get that hot in the first place? Was he not monitoring temperatures? What could even catch on fire thats contacting stuff that would get that hot?

Are you sure you should still run it since it caught on fire? Since it was damaged due to overclocking, the warranty will be voided.

I don't have all the info nor can I image what he could have even done to result in this...

 

The card it self looks like its in really good condition, you wouldn't have even thought it had caught on fire.  

 

I am just here to try to fix it.

No it didn't catch on fire and burn up the thermal paste. The card still turns on. Unless he was pumping 1.8v through it I don't know what he did

I would say inspect the card first. Make sure nothing is melted then plug it in take all OCes off it then reapply thermal paste if it doesn't change

Plugged the card in and it seems to be perfectly fine!  But when I tried to run SLI With my Gigabite and the EVGA 970, when I went into the NIVIDIA Control Panel, the cards both showed up, but would not allow me to enable SLI.  I know I don't have a big enough power supply to run SLI properly but I can't imagine that this is the reason why I can't enable SLI in the NIVIDIA Control Panel.
