hi linustech community,

ive always been a huge tech fan and altho beeing that i only recently started building my own desktop and everything around it.

currently my build is this

case : coolmaster cosmos se 2

mb   : asrock 990fx fatality killer

cpu : amd fx-8350 stock 4.0ghz ( 4.2 turbo ) atm overclocked stable to 4.6ghz @ 1.4625volt

gpu : kfa2 nvidea 960 gtx exoc 4gb

ram : 2x corsair vengeance 8g 1866mhz

ssd : kingston hyper x 240gb

hyrbid : seagate 1tb

cpucooling : coolmaster nepton 240m aio watercooling

corsair vengeance ram cooler fan

2x 120 front fans pullin in

2x 120 fans on radiator pullin in

1x 140 fan on rear blowing out

antec edge 750w power supply

this is my first build, so far i'm happy but i want more :P i already know thx to benches wich i'll post ss's of that my gpu sux and the rest is running overall well,

the problem lies with my overclocking and ram, i got it stable now at 4.6ghz @ 1.4625volt and my ram is running at 880mhz dual so thats 1760mhz wich is below 1866mhz clearly,

therein lies the problem i can't step it even 1step up or my system boots only to give a black screen nothing else, same as when i overclock the cpu to 4.7ghz i only get it to boot when my ram is set at like 900mhz total in bios.

ive been cracking my brain and looking up as much as i can but no luck so far ;)

basicly what i'm looking for is an in dept advice and help about overclocking with my system and the ram and ofc to learn, i'm also a big fan of temp managment so yes ive already planned my next upgrade with a custom waterloop and ether a 1080 or a sli 980ti. time will tell :P

thx in advance.

chimmie

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that loosening the ram timings can help you boost the speed a bit.

There isn't a whole lot of point, though. Honestly, not many tasks are going to benefit much from overclocking your ram. Not noticeably, at least.

yes i understand that but why is it that when i change the cpu multiplier a setp higher to 4.7ghz i can only get it to boot when the ram is set to 900mhz total wich is not overclocking but underclocking :P

Is your CPU stable at 4.7ghz? What are your HT and NB speeds like? What do you have your base clock at?

atm those settings are stable at 4.6ghz :

cpu freq 220 ( stock 200 )

pcie freq 100

cpu multiplier x21 ( stock x20 )

cpu voltage 1.4625v ( stock 1.350 )

nb freq multiplier x10 still stock

voltage still stock at 1.1875v

ht bus speed 2200mhz ( stock 2000 )

ram atm is set at xmp profile 1760mhz

going any higher changes my ram to 900mhz to boot and changeing that gives me the black screens

i can get 4.7ghz stable but only on 900mhz of ram

Have you verified the speeds with a program like CPUZ? I had an issue with my old motherboard where it would show the NB and HT link speeds at much different speeds than I had set in the bios.

yes every setting matches in cpuz with what i have in bios, i also do prime95 about 30mins to an hour to test the overclock atm the 4.6ghz is the setting it works on and do's if perfectly but ive seen these cpu's go up to 4.8 and higher so i'm wondering if it's something i'm doing wrong, or i have been wondering if it's my motherboard.

edit :

also to how far can i push the voltage and the multiplier i'm getting close to 1.5 volt and x22 :P
