My first rack server was a Dell 2950 which was loud as hell. I've since swapped it out for a Dell R610 for my CRS1000v and my ASAv along with a few other virtual machines, a custom built 4RU 24x5TB server, and another 2RU server for surveillance stuff to write to before it's backed up to the big boy.

Delivery fees always suck with servers but I agree, the price you paid was pretty good.

This, since it's a U1 rack server, has idy bity little delta fans, 13 of them, which, with two 95 watt TDP cpus and very small (but rated for 95 watts) heatsinks, make it loud and hot, really loud and hot.

Yours faithfully

Yah, I'm still not sure what magic Dell conjured up when the made the R610 but its stupid quiet and doesn't get crazy hot even at full load.

They probably used some other brand of fan, but to be fair the DL160 is over 26 inches long, so you need a very powerful fan set up to force that air through the system.

Dell R710 for under $100!

That is very close spec wise to my HP DL160, other than the poweredge being U2, and my DL260 being U1. Given over in Europe PC parts are a little bit more expensive, A H Proliant with dual Xeon L5630's and 16GB RAM was a good deal at £99 which was about €126 at the time  (April 20th). The Dual Xeon X5670's cost more than the wholeserver though, at £133, or €170 at the time last month.

Yours faithfully
