Nice Headphones for $200

Hey guys,

I am getting new headphones, I'm trying not to go over $200AUD much and so far I am stuck between the Plantronics Gamecom Commander 7.1 ($190) and Creative Sound Labs Recon 3D Omega ($245). Which one has better sound quality and is it significant?

Is there anything better for a similar price?

I want something capable of 7.1 for my gaming (Also compatible with PS3 or at least stereo from 3.5mm jack) but also great bass response for music and movies.

I am not fussy whether or not it is wireless (Although handy).

Here are my local stores:

www.pccasegear.com

www.cplonline.com.au

Thanks.

Audio Technica ATH-M50. These are fantastic for the price. The only gripe that you may have with them is that they are open headphones, which limits their usage in noisy environments. Also, they come with both a coiled and straight cable, but since you're going to be using them on a console too, get the straight cable version.

As far as sound quality goes, I don't think it gets any better than these for sub-$200.

I've had a good look at those but i still kinda want something gaming oriented and closed headphones would be very helpful

Sorry, the ATH-M50 has a pretty great seal for sound isolation (see edit above). Also, there is no such thing as a gaming headphone in terms of sound quality. If you want an integrated microphone, even then I'd recommend these and getting a ModMic sort of thing.

Get them! They're less than 200$ with shipping from Amazon! (PCCG only has the coiled cable version)

"Gaming oriented" is something non-existent. As for 7.1, that is the worst gimmick of them all. As pointed out in countless other threads, 2 good drivers > 7 crappy ones, and the ".1" would indicate a subwoofer, and I, for one, don't see anyone fitting a subwoofer in a pair of headphones. Perfect positional audio only requires 2 drives and a functioning brain.

Just get a decent pair of (preferably open) stereo headphones. AD700x is recommended a lot, and though it does not look great, the sound is not abysmal like in the "gaming" headsets.

Edit: They even sell them at your store within your budget: link

Edit2: I can't read, you wanted closed ones (although open is better for positional audio). The M50's GRRigger recommends are highly regarded

get a ATH - M50 and some kind of sound card like asus Xonar U3 if you need surround sounds

or razor surround which works with any sound card. as for PS3 i have no idea what to do.

this is the best way to go in my opinion. i use the ATH - M50 and they can isolate noise very well.

EDIT - if you get the ATH- M50 please give it some time to break in the ear cups so it will feel much more comfortable.

There are better options for the money, and he doesn't need a crappy sound card USB dongle thing.

i only recommended the USB dongle because i got the feeling that the OP wanted this be mobile.

that is the only reason. i know there are better setups. but there is no argument that ATH-M50 are the best for that price. considering the sound and the built quality.
