You can get an Athlon X4 860K and a cheap mobo for about $125-130 total, or a G3258 and a cheap mobo for $100-120. If you bump your price up by $10 to $160, you can get an i3-6100 and H110M mobo.

Going used opens up more possibilities.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

That rig is a little unstable and also being used for something else at the moment, but am strongly considering selling that rig, upping the budget, and buying a 6600k and z170 board to put in my main rig and then use the stuff in my main rig for this pc.

doing the xeon mod on that rig will raise the value of the rig since everything is predone for them and its much better than the q9650 CPUs

good idea. id say sell all your junker PCs to make something, better than nothing then just using all that money to buy a proper gaming computer, for me i never upgrade my computer so when i buy something i make sure its top of the line of today so it will stay strong for many years to come. im still using my 10 year old AM2+ motherboard as my main gaming PC as of now until i can get my sleeper rig built.
