C# - FileNotFoundException was unhandled

Hi guys,

 

So I want functionality to an existing program by adding a bit in the taskbar.

 

But it's showing me this error when i do.

 

 

As you can see, the ICON file is within my project

 

Does anybody know what is going wrong and how to fix it?

error is in the pop up "could not find file path/lithium.ico". I believe you can change the icon in the project properties.

No but I wanted to add this to an existing application. This runs as a Windows Form and is supposed to display a small icon in the Windows Taskbar. But it says it can't find the icon (which is "lithium.ico")

oh ok. Nvm.

Make sure the icon is actually in that folder. Go to the folder in explorer and make sure its there.

Apparently it wasn't in my debug folder and so it was having a fit. The Icon was in the same folder as the project the whole time but still...........

Thanks everybody. Copying it to my Debug folder fixed the issue although I have no idea why it fixed the issue.

says to set it in the properties, I haven't used c# for almost a year will need to get back into it.

 

Edit: this only shows when you run a release exe and won't show the icon in debug

Visual studio isn't the smartest from time to time. It needs stuff in folders and not in projects.

Think of it from the program's perspective. it's running from a certain directory and it's looking for an icon called "whatever.ico". It has no concept of a project past compilation. Since you didn't give an explicit path to the icon it will just look in the folder where the application is running from - in this case, the debug folder. (compiling for release will require it to be in the release folder).

Once you know that you have programmed it so that the icon has to be in the same folder as the application, you can also put some error handling around that code if you don't want the program to crash every time if the icon doesn't exist. (or even to show a proper error message rather than just closing).

When you add it to your solution you can click it's properties and set the "Copy to Output Directory" to "Copy Always".
