everyone around here has a couple free virus/malware/etc scanning programs they reccomend. I figure it's time to do a maintenance scan, just in case. reccomended programs?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

What version of Windows?

If you're on windows 10 you can also scan regularly with Windows defender that's already built in. Essentially the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials.

Malwarebytes

*Turn on to also scan for rootkits in the options

Spybot Search and Destroy

I use the older but still supported V1.6.2 at bottom but the new UI version is fine too.

Malwarebytes -> (goes without saying one of the industry standards for a quick pc diagnostic to see if anything immediately noticeable)

tdsskiller -> This will help you validate no rootkits are present good followup scan.

autoruns -> I tend to use this to help me clean up my startup items it provides a clean intuitive 1 stop shop to see all of my programs which are automatically starting no matter how they are.

ccleaner -> not really for viral cleanup but just general everyday cleanup and maintenance.

if you're looking for a more long-term solution I never recommend free solutions (nothing wrong with many of them honestly just don't enjoy the returns that we get or lack thereof)  I'm a big advocate of eset nod32 if you must have free check out sophos.
