Over clocking my CPU.

Hey everyone,

 

I have an Intel i5-4690k, and for now, and R9 270x. I get good frames at decent graphics, but I only have my CPU oc'd to 3999-4000 MHz. I know that graphics and everything are GPU based, and I plan to get a new one ASAP, but what do you think is a good OC for my CPU. I have a Deepcool Captain 120 on it now, and at 4.0 GHz it idles at roughly 38 C. I haven't tweaked much, and my MSI Z97 G5 automatically over locked the CPU, but Deepcool says their Cap. 120 can get really good temps at 4.4 GHz. If anyone has any tips, ideas, or suggestions I'm all ears... Or eyes.

In order to get up there like I have mine, you will need to do some tweaking of the Voltage. Anything on at or below 1.3v is considered safe with the chip. I would not personally recommend though to push to hard on a 120mm AIO cooler.

I don't think the CPU is running at 4ghz all the time unless you kboost on or whatever intel calls it. I say go as far as you can while being stable, 1.3v or less, and under 75C under load

1) idle temps are completely meaningless, what matters is load temps. The two are mutually exclusive, one does not indicate the other.

 

2) temps are far more dependant on voltage, not clockspeed. If you're cooler is comparable to the 212 evo, you'd be looking at about 1.25v or so, depending on your ambient temps.

 

3) never ever use auto overclocks or auto settings. It WILL (not might) put more voltage than you need through your cpu.

 

 

Having said that, try setting your voltage to manual mode, set it to 1.2v, bump up your multiplier by 1 and see how high you can push it until you get blue screens. I'd recommend using occt or intel xtu for stress testing, test for about 30 mins, until you get to your desired oc, then test it for at least two hours.

 

If you get a blue screen, add a small amount of voltage, say 0.02v, and test again.

 

Don't let your temps while reading go higher than 85°C, (occt will automatically stop the test at this temp, which is why I like it so much) and don't go higher than 1.35v (but I'm sure temps will become an issue long before then)
