I do not know that much about VPNing and stuff, but I would like to find a free california VPN. How should I know if a vpn is trustworthy? Does anybody know of a vpn like the one I am looking for?

If you arent paying money for it, to an actual legitimate company, you never know if it is safe or not and neither can you really check.

 

If you only need it for your browser, get an addon, like foxyproxy for firefox, create fake accounts for w/e you need it and you got nothing to loose but your time.

Find one that doesn't keep logs, in america, and is from a trusted company. I like cyber ghost but if you don't pay it is really slow. I got a free year from some german site thanks to the forum

VPNs aren't free, if you want a good and reliable one.
There are solutions like hotspotshield, but they prob. log all your connections.

Using Tunnelbear for instance gives you that freedom, you can select where to tunnel to, when and how.

I prefer hide.me over tunnelbear. A little more expensive, but I don't like some of TunnelBear's limitations, and hide.me has none of them.

I use PureVPN. I share the 5 allowed unique connections with other people to have a 10 dollar a year vpn.

 

for what it is worth, PCMAG found PureVPN to be the fastest vpn they tested, and since I use splittunneling on a pure application basis, I don't really worry about logging (if indeed they do log, which I don't know.)

A free VPN won't be trustworthy. hotspotshield is among the better of the free ones, I hear, but I personally don't believe that they don't track you and inject ads in the free service. How else would they pay for it all? I haven't used it myself so I don't know if they have servers in California. I don't actually know, if free services have the option to pick a server down to a city it's located.

I personally use a service called airVPN. It's not free, but I can tell you that they currently have servers in Los Angeles (2 of them) and Fremont (again, 2 of them) There are nineteen servers in total in continental US and the ping from here in Finland is in the 100-200ms range for all of them. But I guess I should note that the servers they rent, tend to come and go sometimes. They are actively trying to stay ahead of stupid stuff like Netflix blocks and swapping servers seems to work great for it.
