Hi,

I thought I'd ask if anyone had any advice they could offer - I've recently moved into a shared house and we share a Virgin Media internet connection between 7 people - not great I know.

My download speeds are really great for my area around 5-7MB/s on Steam and websites like YouTube load great no problems. However, when I try and play CS:GO or anything that requires a solid ping i'm looking at figures around the 300-500 range which seems ridiculous when my downloads are so smooth.

Is there anything in particular I should try and fix - i'm using a powerline extender and ethernet connecting either side. But I've also tried connecting directly to the WiFi and it still doesn't improve either way. Could any router settings help potentially?

Ping is more about location. How far away are you from the server you are playing on?

Do you have downloading enabled while in game? If yes, you should disable that.

1. Go to settings

2. Download

3. Untick "Enable game downloads in game" or something like that.

1. Check your location and distance from server. Choose servers that are close to you.

2. Avoid powerline and wifi if you want solid latency.

3. Avoid having other network activities such as torrent, downloads, video streaming or video calls. Tough for a 7 person network I know.

4. Do a ping test in windows to check your baseline latency to the servers or gateways.

5. Avoid gaming at peak hours.

The Internet is invented by cats. Why? Why else would it have so much cat videos?

Thanks, I have been tempted to get a solid ethernet wire but I'm only renting and it would be a pretty long cable I'd have to put along the roof, along a corridor and up the stairs in a shared house.

I'm pretty sure I have background downloads disabled but i'll double check.
