Depends. A graphics card is the big swaggy powerful... Card, that you put in your pc. A gpu stands for Graphics Processing Unit, and is the hearth of the graphics card. A lot of people use the word gpu when they mean graphics card (not every time though) because they are basically the same thing. When you buy a graphics card you have a gpu in it.

you cant? haven't been paying attention just thinking back to 4 titan x in sli xD

Nvidia killed off 3 and 4-way SLI because they were unstable and the benefits for having 3-4 graphics cards are too small to account for the price you pay for 4 cards. Nv also officially supports ONLY 2-way sli, although the 3-4way configurations can still be achieved kinda unofficially when you use the old 3-4 way bridges. Nvidia now says that we should use the new high bandwidth bridge or the old LED bridge for optimal performance. Old flex bridges hinder performance a bit, but you can use 2 flex bridges to almost match a led or hb bridge

I am experienced with computers, its just i have not been paying much attention to the 1080 as im waiting for the 1080ti, because of this i did not realise they cut the 3-4 way sli support. I just assumed it would carry on the support from the titan x and 900 series.

Fair enough. 1080ti, a gamer's/enthusiast's wet dream...
