The PCIe 4.0 standard isn't even finalized yet so no, they won't use PCIe 4.0 and cannon lake CPUs will not be compatible with z170 boards as they will use a different socket.

There is no such thing as future proofing

Cannonlake is expected to be running on Z170 though.

Actually people think that Cannonlake will be LGA 1151

Interesting, I know Kaby Lake will be 1151 but I've heard rumors that Skylake-E and possibly Cannon Lake will use 3647.

It doesn't matter if Pcie 4.0 isn't finalized yet, it matters if it will utilized by motherboard manufacturers and that's what I was asking

If it's not finalized or available until at least 2017 then nobody will use it until 2017.

GPU's with PCIE 3.0 don't even use there full potential bandwidth.

Well Volta will not be out until 2018 so what I was asking was will there most likely be gpus that will use pcie 4.0

GPUs wont be using PCIE 4.0 until like a year or two years after it is released for motherboards.

Long answer short. If you want PCIE 4.0 GPU, You gonna wait a LONGGGG time

Yes I know, but I've been reading up on pcie 4.0 and apparently it will be the first pcie standard that will not be backwards compatible, as in gpus that are built for pcie 4.0 will not be compatible with pcie 3.0 slots, I'm wondering will Nvidia and Amd use pcie 4.0 in their next gen gpus or will pcie 4.0 not be included in most motherboards by that time?

PCIE 4.0 is backwards compatible. Don't know what your reading

I don't see PCIe 4.0 being mainstream in most motherboards until a couple years after the launch of the spec, so probably 2019 or even 2020. Both AMD and Nvidia want to target as much of the market as possible and releasing GPUs, even high end ones, that require a new board as well, isn't going to profit them so they'll stick with 3.0 until 4.0 becomes widespread, especially if it won't be backwards compatible.

You dont even know what pcie is and whats for, and you want to futureproof pc?

You have loads of bandwidth already lol. Unless you are power user with 4 gpus render machine with many expansion cards and whatnot. But then you wouldnt be posting here xD

"you cant futureproof yadiyadayada"

You can futureproof pc by buying:

-parts that will enable you use of future software/firmware

-parts that you are ok with them now but will be usable for any of your future projects

-parts that will save you money on the long run so you dont need to switch them out like more powerful gpu just to get 60 fps 1080p maxed

-parts that wont hold your future pc upgrades back (bottleneck, physical, firmware or something)

etc...

I know all that but I seem to have some sort of problem where I'm paranoid about something dying on me before I can get a new one(don't have any money left etc.)

No, Pcie 4.0 will be backwards compatible but I have read that cards that are built for pcie 4.0(gpus, sound cards, pcie ssds etc)wont be able to be actually inserted into a pcie 3.0 slot

Most likely the gpu will die within 5 years, that's what I am worried about

and even 5 years are good enough for futureproofing. especially nowadays pcs are fast enough to be used for a longer time. i really hate the idea of people saying you cant future proof. you can do it buying more expensive parts that will work longer. more expensive = better performance = longer lifetime. and trust me i have 12 year old pc at my grandparents house and its able to play roller coaster tycoon well. maybe the ltt members are just spoiled because if it doesnt max out gta v its unusable but trust me gaming is not important in life. do work.

That's not the point of it man, a lot of it is the ability to upgrade in the future, that's why I'm so worried, I only have so much money and it's not like I'm gonna get an extra 1000 bucks to to geta new cpu mobo and gpu every time a new gpu and cpu comes out, I am just a kid which makes it kinda hard to make money for upgrades. If I get a top tier gpu and cpu Im probably stuck with it until I am old enough to get a job, which is in like 4 years.

yes thats better to buy 1 thing expensive and use it for a long time rather than buying a new thing every year.

Dude, I literally said the very opposite of that, I prefer upgrading every 2 generations, I hate having outdated tech

I'm not using my parent's money for one and I'm not gonna be asking for money every other year, I'm trying to budget my money like this

Original build $xxx

Upgrades $xxx

This way I use the same amount of money and most likely won't end up with any pc part that is obsolete or dead
