Hi!
I'm looking for any tips or opinions regarding my planned build.
I want to reduce the severity of any bottlenecks if I'm pushing the system in-game. But have I gone overkill with anything like the CPU and PSU?

https://www.pccasegear.com/sc/v47

I am aware that I am looking at a FreeSync monitor with an nvidia GPU. xD

Well where do you live? and why don't you just get an RX 480 when the after market cards come out?

Also don't buy a founders edition card

Also if the 5820K is the same price as the 6700K buy that instead

and I'd look towards a WD Red 2TB drive over a seagate drive

and make sure your wireless card supports up to wireless AC so you never need to buy one again

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Please put this into a PCPartpicker list. It is the most trusted among the fourms

I'm in Australia.
The Founder Edition card was more of a placeholder, I might opt for a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 8GB, I was a little paranoid about mixing brands too much though.
The 5820K is 80AUD more, from what I understand they're not terribly different for gaming and I would have to change my MoBo. I might stick with the 6700K for now :)
I will take your advice on the HDD.
Thanks for the wireless advice too, my current 802.11bgn seems to manage as much as my internet connection can deliver but I will look into this.

I tried to put this list into PCPartPicker but had trouble finding some of the parts. I went with PCCaseGear because that's where I plan to buy the parts and can see what they have in stock. I'll have another go soon though.

Cheers, guys

the 5820K is more so it's another part you'd never have to worry about replacing, since it's a 6 core 12 thread CPU for not much more than the 6700K overall, and the 6700K would only be slightly faster per Ghz. In addition the motherboards are a fair amount more high end

At least on the part picker the motherboard selection is fairly small, but you do get more features and the higher end platform with the extra cost, which you could totally, probably afford with the RX 480 over the 1070 lol

PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/RGwLxr
Price breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/RGwLxr/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($564.00 @ IJK)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty X99M Killer/3.1 Micro ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($385.98 @ Mwave Australia)

Otherwise saving money with the i7 6700 non K and a more budget board is ideal, since the non K part turbos to 4ghz, so really you aren't going to get too much faster than that.

Otherwise mixing brands isn't going to matter, but if you're getting a free-sync display you might as well get a 480 or 390x depending on their pricing

Also your display choice is 1440p 144hz, a single 1070 can't do 4k or 1440p 144hz really, it's probably about 70% there, and even the 1080 is about 90% there, I'd wait for the 1080ti/Vega cards to really shoot for a high end GPU for that display

Forgive my ignorance, but how much difference in real world performance would we see between a 6 core 12 thread CPU (i7 5820K) and a 4 core 8 thread CPU (i7 6700K)?

My reasoning was to get the Skylake model with overclocking capabilities to match the overclockable MoBo, I wasn't aware that I needed more features with a higher end MoBo either.

If I do stick with the GTX1070 I may change my monitor to a 1080p 144hz IPS with G-Sync.

Going down in display quality totally isn't worth it, why are you dead set on the 1070? it can't max out your display, it's faster than the RX 480 to be sure, but neither will be perfect for 1440p 144hz, however, the top end GPUs in a few months will be able to do it, or possibly RX 480 crossfire will be decent in more games, find a cheap 980ti it has the same performance as the 1070

and it's easily going to be worth getting the 1440p 144hz display, or perhaps non G-sync 1080p 144hz displays if you're going to buy 3 of them eventually

-

The 6700K will end up being probably .5ghz faster than the i7 6700, so personally I don't see the value there vs the 4ghz turbo on the non K part

If you just want the fastest thing per core then the 6700K is it. I'm just saying if you're spending that kind of money, and you wanna play with overclocking, 6 cores at 4.5ghz, is more impressive than 4 cores(5% faster IPC) at 4.5ghz, although I think most people only hit 4.2ghz on the 5820K from what I remember in a leaderboard

Here's a review of the ATX variant of the Fatal1ty board, I don't think there's too much difference between it and the micro ATX version

I designed my build around the GTX 1070 because I was impressed with the benchmarks. From what I can tell it has a roughly 50% improvement on fps in games over the RX 480. I wasn't looking at maxing out the display, just getting the best fps I could at 1440p.

But if even the GTX 1070 won't handle games at 1440p, then why would I go to the RX 480? I thought maybe I should downgrade my CPU to the i7 6700, forget about overclocking, and get a better quality 1080p monitor. This is what I've done in the above post (Although now I'm thinking I should remove the network adaptor and go for a MoBo with one built in like the Gigabyte GA-Z170N Gaming 5).

I appreciate the help you've been giving me BTW.

The 480 gets you the better CPU/platform, and it's pretty alright for 1440p gaming

and a 480 itself is fairly capable for 1080p 144hz, which would further save you money on a free-sync display vs a G-sync display of the same specs
