They won't crossfire together because the 280X is GCN 1.0 and the 480 is GCN 1.4. If these were a 7970 and a 280X then you totally could, but nope, not right now.

If DX12 or OpenGL Vulkan allows the system to use the resources of the 280X in supplement to the 280X then great, but strictly speaking, that's not crossfire.
