I posted about this yesterday and someone said use Clonezilla. It wont work because how I am doing this.

I want to clone a large HDD to a small SSD. I only used like 30 GB of the HDD and the SSD is 120 GB so I have room.

All recommendations are welcome!

I would prefer it to run off of a USB and not have to be installed. But that's not necessary

A little late to the party here lol

I use macrium reflect been best clone software iv used. especially going from large drives to small drives and pcs that use secure boot.

And better yet is free.

Better late with solid information than never.  Thanks for the submission.  Maybe it will work well for moving to my SSD.
Hmm so how do you make a bootable CD to clone the OS drive.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

Ok so I figured out to click the cd in the top left to make a bootable windows ce.  Don't feel like using a disc on it and the usb option is not capable of formatting for some reason.

Spoiler

I would have to delete the partition on my micro SD and since that's not something easy to do in disk management (yeah I could do it in the command line) I decided to make an ISO and use www.isotousb.com program to make a bootable windows on the micro SD.  Going to reboot and see what's up.

Ok so the spoiler didn't work.  But macrium has info on their site.  Have to head out though so I can't test it til I get home though.

nowai my thread.
seriously though, I subscribed to this thread because I'm in exactly the same situation you are - trying to look for a good solution to clone less than 200gb of data on a 1tb mechanical to a 240gb ssd.  I was attempting to provide you (and others) with my experience using the software and what I thought about it; however, I see it's not appreciated. ;)

Tried with the micro sd and a thumb drive and none of them wanted to play ball.  Diskpart wouldn't let me set a partition as active so I think that might have something to do with it.  I do still have a dvd burner in the computer so I just used a disc and that boots just fine.  I intend to use the program to make periodic full image backups of the solid state drive in the event windows takes a dump for some reason I can just use the dvd to boot up and restore an image.  Not quite ready to kill off my windows 10 test install on the ssd, but when I'm ready this software does seem a bit easier than clonezilla and I already know that one can't shrink free space off a partition to fit on a smaller drive.  Thanks for the suggestion, GL OP.
