What kind of rebates? (MIR - mail in rebates, IR - instant rebates, etc.)

What country?

What retailer?

Weren’t mail-in rebates labelled a time-wasting information scam years ago? Surprised people still do those, lol

Actually those seem to be most common, aside from instant rebates which are basically a. store credit or b. temporary price cut

They include them because most people don't redeem them. I wouldn't call it a scam, but they're annoying.

So how do I do those rebates?

You follow the instructions. It's really quite simple. Any retailer offering a Mail In Rebate (MIR) will have the necessary MIR Form to go with it. If you're buying online, these are generally available directly through the product page via a link. Some online retailers have special sections of the website dedicated to MIR info, and will help you find the specific form you need.

Once you have the form, you print it out, and fill in the details. Pay INCREDIBLY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAIL. The slightest mistake on the form could reject your rebate. You should be following the instructions right down to the letter.

Once you've filled out the form correctly, it will have an address on it. You mail the form to the stated address. Often they will require a copy of your invoice, or the UPC Barcode, etc, as "proof of purchase", so ensure that any "extras" like that are secured inside the envelope.

After that? You wait 6+ months until you get a tiny cheque in the mail.

Not exactly. Most manufacturers simply count on the average person not going through the hassle of a MIR, plus they can easily reject an application that was filled out incorrectly.

Most people that submit MIR's DO get the refund eventually, but it just takes a damn long time to do. I personally will often not bother with products that have MIR's, as I don't have the time or patience to deal with that, nor wait for the return. Not worth $10 or $20. I'll just look around for a comparable product without MIR's that is on sale, etc.
