RX 480 or nah?

Hello! basically I've been at a crossroads of decision making for some time.

 

I would very much like a stronger graphics card to surpass my GTX 950 and was initially intrigued by the GTX 1070. However to upgrade to a 1070 or even any other stronger GTX card I'd need to upgrade my 450w PSU.

I have recently noticed the really interesting price point for the RX480 and the very low power consumption it requires. It is said to run rather well with a low end PSU and provide excellent 1080p 60fps gaming, which is the mark I'm striving for as well as future proofing my VR chances.

 

My question is should I go for the RX480 or aim for a new GTX card that would require a whole new PSU. Also would the Pre-Overclocked RX480 be too much more power for me to handle.

My main concern is value for money and the ability to play 1080p maxed out, at some point I would like a better keyboard and SSD so saving money would be nice.

 

Do you thing the RX is right for me?

THERE'S A 950!!!!! Cool, didn't know that. Don't look into NVidia anyways (personal preference and I've got a wallet that says Price/Performance), anyways...

A RX480 is not ment to compete against a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080, its ment for Low cost VR and people with a low budget.
I'd go with a 1070 and upgrade your CPU to a i5 (4690(K or non-K) for 1150 socket, 6600(K or non-K) for 1151) if you aim for a sweet-spot gaming machine.

Going with a RX 480 and a i5 would future proof yourself with the CPU whilest saving your wallet.
The FX-6300 will bottleneck, I'm not shure

The cpu will bottleneck it but I say wait for after market as you will have better drivers by then and better power deliver and cooling solution

A RX480 is not ment to compete against a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080, its ment for Low cost VR and people with a low budget.
I'd go with a 1070 and upgrade your CPU to a i5 (4690(K or non-K) for 1150 socket, 6600(K or non-K) for 1151) if you aim for a sweet-spot gaming machine.

Going with a RX 480 and a i5 would future proof yourself with the CPU whilest saving your wallet.
The FX-6300 will bottleneck, I'm not shure

Yeah I do really want to upgrade to an i5 6600K, it'll take a lot of saving up but nothing is free. Thanks a loot for your help

Depends on what you want to do with it, what settings/resolution you want to use in games, and what your budget is. Also, how bad is your PSU? What brand/model is it? Also, the power margin between the GTX 1070 and RX 480 is kinda narrow, so it seems odd to me that you'd need a new PSU for one card but not both.

 

My simplified answer is that if you want a $200–300 video card today, the RX 480 is the one to buy. If you can spend more, I think the GTX 1070 is worth the extra. Your FX-6300 will pose a bottleneck issue below 60 FPS in certain games… not all games. You will get much better results from the RX 480 in a majority of games, regardless.

No, especially for VR. The recommended resolution and fps that is required to run VR is 2560x1440 at 90fps. The 480 averages 40-50fps at that setting across most games meaning that AMD failed in their claim to deliver a baseline VR card. The ironic thing about the 480 is that it performs close to the 290 which is occasionally on sale for less than $200 meaning that you're not even getting a good price to performance deal anyways.

The RX 480 will be a big upgrade for you and you should get a few years of good use out of it.  Your CPU will be OK in the short run, but you can start saving for an upgrade in 2017 if money is tight.

 

Definitely wait for after market coolers, as the reference design runs too hot IMO.
