I know this might seem like kind of a dumb question for most, especially since money ain't that tight and "PC enthusiasts" usually should be happy to buy and build new stuff, but well ;-)

I recently noticed, that many games, even CS:GO push my CPU to 100% load (with some background stuff running), so I figured it might be time for an upgrade, replacing my non-overclockable 2500.

However: a new Skylake board, 16Gig's of DDR4 and something like a 6600k are going to be ~450 - 500€, I guess..

Second option might be to simply score something like a 2600k / 2700k on Ebay (which go for around ~140€ / 160€), overclock the hell out of them and gain 4 additional threads and a few hundred MHz more, which might as well do the trick and safe me some money.

Question is: are those still reasonable processors? I know, that games wont run faster / brighter, as most don't profit from additional threads, but it'd allow the OS to unload the background threads to other threads.

Any 2600k / 700k owners around?

Best,

Chris

CS:GO shouldn't push a 2500 into 100% util...

scan for malware, do a clean install

I'd go with a cheaper option there and overclock to like 4.8GHz with a good 240mm or 280mm AiO

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)

FireStrike // Extreme // Ultra // 8K // 16K

Its no malware, just a PC that has multiple stuff open besides a game. I usually divide between work / uni and play by using multiple desktops, so theres a bunch of stuff open, see below. The only "cheaper option would be a 2500k, since I own a 2500 ;) And I guess even the DR3 can handle some overclocking.

With CSGO's CPU utilization, it will get close.  Especially if you're pushing 300+ fps.

That being said, hitting 10% in CSGO doesn't really mean OP needs to upgrade.  I doubt the extra 20~ fps when you're already 300+ are worth $500.

Hm, editor seems kind of broken, can'twrite outside the qoute

Okay, that's nice to know that CS:GO is limited by CPU from a certain point / framerate. I've yet to experience lag caused by the CPU - even GTA V (limited by GPU at ~60Hz @ 1440p) which should require some CPU power for all those NPC's is only pushing it between 40 - 80%. I am currently more or less only looking at possible options - no certain upgrade plans (yet). Time will tell, but maybe it will last even last till Kaby Lake /Skylake refresh. But thanks for the insight! :)
