Is the GTX 1080 Ready for 4k gaming?

I've been watching a lot of GTX 1080 reviews, and I noticed different YouTubers get some different results than others. It seems like the 1080 should be able to do 4k gaming, but then what is the 1080 Ti for? 1440 is for the GTX 1070, the GTX 1080 is for 4K, than what's the 1080 Ti for? Or am I wrong, is the 1080 just not enough for 4k? So if I'm buying a new card, what I be better off with the 1080 Ti or 1080?

The 1080ti will be for more demanding games in 4k and fps requirements over 60fps in 4k which may be on the horizon. At the moment we're stuck at 60fps for 4k but we should see that change soon.

Short answer: No.

 

Medium answer: Not really you'd have to settle for fairly shit framerates at 30 FPS or some downgrade of settings. 

 

Conceding answer: It's not ideal but considering increased resolution works a lot better than many other tricks we have on games to look more detailed you could argue that medium to high settings on 4k looks a lot better than ultra details at 1080p simply because of the much higher DPI assuming same size of panel.

I was going to but with the performance of the 1080 I'm going with a FTW Hybrid. EVGA is making the cooler available for the FTW this cycle so I'm jumping on that. I'm at 1440 so doubt it will be an issue. And I'm expecting the 1080ti to be 900+ so screw that

I doubt the 1080 Ti is gonna be more than like $750 MSRP. If it was to much, they wouldn't sell it because people would just buy the new Titan X.

The 1080 is more of an in between card from what I've got. It does 1440 well enough, but doesn't do 4k that well to be called a good 4k card, IMO.

 

I have a feeling the 1080Ti will be the 4K card. It'll handle 4k well.  The 1080 is a better 1440p 144hz card then it does 4k. I'd venture to say 1080 SLI is probably what's going to hold 4k users over until the Ti launches.

Have you seen the price on the 1080s? 750us for Gigabytes AIO card. Cheapest 1080ti will be in the 800 range, I only buy the better cards so that's where I got 900. The Titan 10 will be 1100-1300us at least. 1500 bucks wouldn't shock me with the pricing we've seen with Pascal.

I'm not ready for a loop yet. Still happy with my AIO. If after my 1080 Hybrid needs to be replaced I upgrade the CPU as well I might go for a loop.

It all depends on the 1080 and the games you plan on playing. Some of the one's like the Strix, Extreme Gaming, HOF and FTW/Classified, Gaming X versions will run easily around the 60fps mark with high to ultra settings in some games, and then run closer to the 30/40fps on others. If you work on the premise that 40fps+ is a playable framerate, then most of the current AIB 1080's will do that. If you want higher rates and most likely more future proofing for future games... I'd then recommend either an SLI setup or hold out to see what the rumored Ti/Titan version of Pascal might deliver.

Sorry, thought you meant the one with a pre installed block.

 

I've had VERY bad experiences with Gigabyte, so it would have to have an advantage over the Hybrid to get me to chance it. Not sure if the 1080 Waterforce has the non replaceable radiator fan like the 980ti had but that was why I completely passed it over. Which was too bad because it cooled the VRMs better than the MSI or EVGA.

Oh that's too bad. Gigabyte has been great to me so far (fingers crossed). I'm not sure if the radiator is replaceable or not though. The VRM cooling does look fantastic though.

Meh, I doubt it will be that much. Nvidia won't be able to compete with AMD at these prices. Plus, the 1080 and 1070 prices will drop pretty soon to I have a feeling. No one is going to to pay $100 above the rated price for a 1080.

Than what is the purpose of the 1080? 1070 is more than enough for 1440p, and 1080 Ti is clearly for 4k. 1080 is like the awkward relative.

well the 970 was good for 1080p, 980 was for 1440p, and the 980 Ti was for 144hz 1440p, or low end 4k in SLI.

im getting 4k60 on doom with most settings maxed, aa turned right down. same with gta 5
