What GPU to buy

Truex98

I'm building my first gaming rig for myself soon. I have already acquired a evga 850W psu, Samsung 850 evo ssd, 16gb of HyperX fury ddr3 ram, and a gigabyte am3+ matx mobo. I still need to buy a FX-8350 and a gpu. This is my problem, I'm not sure if I should go ahead and get the msi gtx 1070 gaming x 8g. I know the cpu will sort of bottleneck the gpu, but it's my first rig and I'll sometime in the future probably  go zen and stick with that gpu. I'm trying to decide if I should future proof my gpu with the 1070 or buy something more value like a 750 to or a 950 even. Also on another note,. Trying to decide on a cpu cooler. I'll probably go stock for a little while until the time comes when I just can't live the the noise of the stock am3 cooler. My question is should i go with a hyper 212 evo for 25 bucks including a 5 dollar rebate, or get some type of water cooler. I have no clue what I would pick if I decided to go water cooled, that's why I'd like to ask you guys and think what u think. Thanks for the suggestions.

Custom Rig: FX-8350 4GHz, MSI GTX 1060 6g Gaming X, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, 16GB Hyperx Fury 2x8GB 1866MHz, Samsung 240GB 850 EVO SSD, 3TB WD Blue 5400RPM, Evga 850W G2 Psu, Gigabyte AM3+ Micro Atx Motherboard, Corsair Spec 01

Laptop: Asus ROG GL502VM, i7 6700HQ, GTX 1060, 16GB DDR4, 240 Toshiba M.2 SSD, 1TB HDD

What you should do is sell your mobo and get an Intel cpu, AMD is crap a this point. Get some Z170 board and an i3 if your short on money, at least you'll have and upgrade path and won't have to change your platform.

I'm fine with going am3+ for now, I don't plan on upgrading really anytime soon. I'm don't really play any demanding games, GTA V at the most. Plus the board I got is a simple am3 matx board, nothing fancy just enough to get the job done. I'd rather use AMD for now and then later on go Intel or zen and get myself a nice looking atx board. But for now, a decent little am3+ matx is fine.

Custom Rig: FX-8350 4GHz, MSI GTX 1060 6g Gaming X, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, 16GB Hyperx Fury 2x8GB 1866MHz, Samsung 240GB 850 EVO SSD, 3TB WD Blue 5400RPM, Evga 850W G2 Psu, Gigabyte AM3+ Micro Atx Motherboard, Corsair Spec 01

An i3 6100 will still bottleneck a GTX 1070 and it isn't much better than a FX 8350 or it all.

As for the OP. Do you already have an AM3+ CPU?

Not yet but I'll will be ordering it on Amazon soon. I'm waiting on a 100 dollar refund on a 750w psu I returned then I'm gonna use that and order it. Sort of between the 8350 and 6300. But I figure I might as well spend a little more and get 2 more cores and a slightly higher clock without oc. Mainly because I'm not really a advanced overclocker. Only done it a few times.

I know, but he can upgrade easily from that, otherwise he'll be stuck with an outdated and power-hungry chip.

Forget about cpu bottleneck first, and look at the limitation your monitor might have. The way I see it, if your monitor is running 1080p 60 fps then getting GTX 1070 is complete overkill and a waste of money. That money can be saved for upgrading to the next generation GPU when such time arrives. There is no such thing as future proofing.

I plan on eventually buying the BenQ RL2455Hm or maybe the BenQ GL2460Hm. Or if you guys know of something better for around 120-180 bucks. I'm not really a monitor genius.

With those two monitors in mind, you would not be utilizing the full potential of the GTX 1070. At 1080p Ultra on Doom, the GTX 1070 gets 138 fps and a GTX 950 gets 48 fps. Since the monitors you pointed out can only display 60 fps, the extra money you spend to get 78 more fps from the 1070 doesn't mean anything. I would recommend getting a card one step up of the 950. A GTX 960 or R9 380 would fit better for high to ultra settings at 60 fps. Newegg on ebay sells them for around $170-190. And because it is on ebay, you also save on the sales tax your state has.

As for the CPU cooler, the Hyper 212 Evo is fine. The stock AMD cooler is known to be loud.

He already has the motherboard anyway the FX isn't power hungry it is just less efficient compared with newer architectures. Power Hungry makes it sound like a GTX 480, which it isn't.

What kind of monitors would be able to display that kind of fps?

Wait for the benchmarks on the Rx480 before buying your GPU. Its supposed to come out at the end of this month and is rumored to be thr best bang to the buck 1080p card ever

Yeah I was also considering a rx480, that could be a solid choice for just 200 bucks.

Right, I totally forgot about that. $200 for the 4GB variant and supposedly performs around a R9 390 and GTX 980.

My only problem if I were to get a 960 is that they are around 180-250 bucks with the 4gb models being in the higher range. Knowing me I got to have that 4g model which is around 230 bucks. So based on that for another hundred or two hundred bucks I could easily get a 1070 which outperforms a Titan. So difficult to pick.

With the RX 480 being released on June 29th, I wouldn't even consider a 960. I'd say your choices are narrowed down between a 480 or 1070. On another note, no vendor is selling a GTX 1070 for $380. They're all around the $400-430 price range.

An 8350 will bottleneck the 1070. I own an 8350 and ot bottlenecks my 970 with cpu intensive games. Save the money and wait on the 480.

How long do you think until other manufacturers like msi or asus release theirs? I'd rather have a msi card, they look sick.

2 weeks to a month give or take. Maybe less since they also make Nvidia cards, and probably will just take the current 1070 and 1080 designs and slap that on the 480.

I'll probably go with the 480 then. Or who knows maybe 1070s will go down in price soon. Will update on what I do.

The reference design isn't bad. You can get that one launch day.
