Waiting for Zen

So I have been thinking about upgrading my CPU solution from an Fx8350 to either Broadwell or Skylake. However I know that AMDs Zen series is rumored to release at the end of this year.

I know that its rumored that Zen has a 40% IPC improvement over Excavator. But, where would that put Zen compared to Skylake? Because I don't want to wait for Zen if its hype claims dont even put it up to snuff against the current Intel offerings.

I know its all rumors right now, but I want to know where Zen would theoretically be.

from stuff ive seen zen is on the level of haswell

From what the rumours claimed, it might be better than broadwell in IPC.

Short answer is we don't know. We don't know how the architecture will compare. We don't know how many cores or GHz they will give you. We don't know what they will charge for it. Given that, good luck in working out what it will do. If you need a new PC now, get it. If you can wait and see, you might choose to do so.

One sec I left my crystal ball in my other pants, can I borrow yours skatblast? :P

That's kinda what i based it on, as well as some other videos. But this one makes the most sense

To ask better without angering the "anti-crystall ball" crowd.

Where would a single 4ghz core of zen, given that it is in fact 40% faster than excavator, compare to a single 4ghz core from Skylake or Broadwell?

excavator +40% IPC would put this at around haswell level of performance...which IMHO is very unlikely.

This is probably AMD cherry picking the best case scenario where the new architecture really shine when compaired to previous gen stuff

and greatly exploiting it like it's always the case with those big companies intel and nvidia are doing the same shit.

We don't even know if the 40% increase is accurate, or what the final clockspeeds will be. Remember, steamroller was said to have a 30% ipc increase, and while it did increase ipc, it's clockspeeds were a bit lower, and ended up being only slightly faster.

My point here is, we don't know anything until the reviews are out. Anyone can make guesses, but yeah, it would be better to just wait for the reviews.

I'd add on the +40% IPC claim, which is about the only unambiguous info from AMD, is it would likely be some average. Some things will be a LOT faster, some things maybe less. So the performance will depend on the workload you put it to.

I was hoping Zen would be my first ever AMD CPUs, but after seeing that videos it seems I will stuck with Intel. I am more focused to power efficiency and performance rather than price, since most of my computer is 24/7 on idle, and I need it to be power efficient.

It seems just RX480 would be my first AMD product in the time being.
