I managed to sell my 2x MSI GTX 970 last Monday, luckily the day before the price drop and got myself around £350 for the pair of them. I'm currently running a 2560x1440 G-Sync monitor and I honestly have no idea what to do. This part may make everyone just want to say "1080" but I'm not so sure and I still want some advice.

I want a long term solution as when I purchased my 970s I was hoping to have them for longer than a year and a half but given the fact I went from 1080p to 1440p the VRAM issue did cause me some problems in certain games and believe me when I say I play every new release, I pretty much do. I'm quite happy in my sweet spot of 1440p right now and have little to no intention of upgrading to 4K until It's possible at 144Hz. I'm not sure if this makes any difference but I do run 2 monitors (1x 1080p, 1x 1440p) and may add another to the setup in the near future depending on how nice Twitch is to me.

I've also heard about MSI and ASUS sending out cards to reviewers with different clock speeds? Have these cards been significantly faster or is it just that they're set to OC mode rather than Default? I literally can't seem to get a definite answer.

The only issue I'm left with is which brand card do I get? As long as It's not a FE card I'm hearing the differences are pretty small this time round?

Just to be clear, I currently have NO graphics card so I need to make a choice one way or the other. Waiting for a 1080Ti or anything else is pretty much out of the question.

The BIOS was modified to a 3% overclock, wich represents nothing very important, they are still good

Pick the one that has the best features for you, there all the same more or less.

Asus STRIX has fan headers on the bottom of the card

MSI Gaming X (or Z not sure) has internal HDMI for VR headsets

etc

im still deciding too, i think the better choice for you is:

gtx 1080

gtx 1070 SLI

This had crossed my mind but given the fact I've had annoyances with SLI in the past I think I would rather stick with the 1080. Also the fact that not all games support it can be quite a pain at times.

Ah, so something that you could achieve yourself anyway. I guess you have to give ASUS props for admitting to doing so.

While they did ship reviewers with a moded bios (and btw, I'm rioting MSI for this generation unil they formaly apologize), the difference in speed was minuscule.

If you wanna get mad it like I did go ahead. BUT, make sure you are getting mad for the right reason. Get mad because they are shipping different Bios than retail, rather than because they are shipping faster Bios.

As I've said, RIOT MSI. I'm not going to riot Asus just ye, for I haven't seen any solid evidence on the Bios thingy. EVGA managed to screw up their cooler this gen, making it ugly AF.

So that leaves us with Gigabyte, which I quite like the cooler design. Or Zotac, if you can deal with the grey and yellow backplate (I can't...).

thats why noVideo has changed their focus on SLI, focusing on two cards only with a new bridge, but yeah if u don't want that, 1080 is a good choice.

I've done a lot of research and from what ive seen all card seem to reach 2-2.1ghz so don't waste money on paying for an expensive card.

Firstly, that leaves me with no option other than 1080 as multiple people have said 144Hz = 1080.

Secondly, I'm made at ASUS and MSI for the correct reason!

Thirdly, ASUS have admitted to doing so but MSI still haven't. (Proof on HEXUS).

Branding.. well, I could always change the ZOTAC backplate and I do get a nice 5 year warranty with them. But I'll just have to look at both and decide. Unless MSI apologise in the coming weeks.

1070 or 1070 sli. The 1080 isn't ahead of a 1070 by enough to make it worth the cost over one 1070, let alone 2.

Also people are still crying over MSI giving reviewers the Gaming App? The clock speeds are clearly advertised on their website, and the app is recommended (and not even necessary if you want to overclock it yourself instead)

As I've mentioned above I'm not really prepared to go SLI again because of the previous issues of having 970's in SLI. The only reason there's such a price difference is 1. the brand. 2. GDDR5X.

The 1070 is like a 980 Ti. The 1080 is like an overclocked 980 ti. If that distinction is worth £200 to you, go ahead.

I'm also curious as to what these "sli issues" you're referring to are.

The distinction you're making isn't entirely accurate given new technology carries a premium price tag and as I said part of that comes from the faster memory. I'm looking to make a long term investment without going SLI. 1070 at 144Hz isn't going to be any use to me as people keep pointing out.

Also, G-sync is most effective when at lower frames.. It's kinda the point of having it. I'd go 1070, and see if it's enough.. if not look at 1080ti / sli  later and if your really not happy don't forget your 2 week no argue returns... (yay for remain, you lose that if voting out :P)

But you've seen the reviews and have as much info as the rest of us.. I think with gsync monitor.. go 1070 and enjoy high fps where you can and g-sync keeping things smooth when you can't.

Neither of these GPUs is going to be that investment without SLI. Not unless you're intending on running 1080p 60fps for years.

faster ram is going to do shit all to your fps. If a 1070 won't do what you want, then unless you're only a few fps off then a 1080 won't either. In terms of performance, you're looking at the difference between a 980 ti and a Titan X.

I certainly wouldn't have a problem buying one.. There was a Galax rep over on HWC a while ago, I'm sure they'd have representatives on OCUK forums and they have been around a while and are usually priced much higher.

As for which cooler is best... really I'd be looking at the cheapest custom cooled unless there was a more prefereable design/cooler/brand within a few quid, skip it.
