Would that ram work for a cheap 64GB setup?

4 of those will cost me 2596 Nok, while the cheapest other 64GB will cost me 3996 Nok.

Its a 14 core Xeon build, so 64GB is just a little over 4GB per core.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

That will work fine. RAM is RAM, but be sure to buy from a known brand and get the amount you want at the speed you want for the lowest price.

Just a note, that ram is Non -EEC. So hence my question below.

However I must ask, why do you need 64 GB? What are you planing on using the PC for?

My new Gaming PC.

Spoiler

Case: Coolmaster CM690III, Motherboard: Asus Z170-AR, CPU: I5 6600K 4.6Ghz, OS: Windows 10 HP 64 bit, RAM: X1 8GB G.Skill DDR4, GPU: Galax GTX 960 (Overclocked), Storage: Kingston V300 SSD 120GB(OS), X2 1TB 5400RPM HDD, 500GB Samsung 7200RPM HD, PSU: Cougar RS 750 Watt, Peripherals: Logitech G910 Orion Spark,  World Of Tanks Edition 2014 DeathAdder Razer Mouse And Mouse Pad, Sennheiser HD 518. , Palsonic tftv6042fHD, Logitech Z506 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers

It an video encoding PC. I wont need ECC as I dont have a scheduled where I cant re do it.

Also, my current gaming/video system has 32GB and premier uses as much as I give it.

Then you will be good to go. The ram will work fine.

Just do me a favor and watch this video in full. To see if you really need that 64 Gb.

As I said, when I work with 4k video, so can I use 27.9GB (4GB to other things).

So it will use at least that. Plus I also work with after effect now and then, which benefits even more from X GB per core.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

SO here is the deal when it comes to memory selection.  Make sure it is on your QVL list!  Check your motherboard and then you'll be able to determine what RAM is the best.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

I just did, buts its no help. The list mentions 8x 4GB, when its an mATX board with 4x RAM slots.

Then that is the only thing that motherboard supports.  When you start experimenting outside those bounds, it might go well and it might not.

According to this so can I put 8 sticks of ram into a 4 slot motherboard. It just makes no sense.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

No, its saying that is a 8 stick kit of RAM.  That you can buy that kit and it will work.

On the right side is where it tells you how many DIMMs you can actually use.

Who on earth will buy an 8 stick kit and only use half?

Now that is a crazy question...  But I hope you see now that the "DIMM socket support" is the place where it tells you how many DIMMs you can use.

And looking at your QVL list, there is only one stick of RAM guaranteed to work and give you 64GB of RAM...

Yeah, its a bit strange that its that few high GB ram sticks that are supported, yet many high core Xeons are.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

Not really, its the way the memory manager works and the way that page's are handled.  I personally don't suspect that you're going to see capacities in 4 DIMM motherboards extend past 64GB until a new memory controller or something comes out.

Its 2 64GB kits that works, in a workstation motherboard. And nether are easy to get a hold of.

Also, I just checked reviews and they use memory thats not on the list. So is the list just what's guaranteed to work?

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

the QVL list is simply the memory sticks that the board has been designed to work with.  Meaning they have profiles in the BIOS, meaning they offer the right traces to make use of the latency, and that they have been tested and known to work.

The only reason why I am so QVL heavy is because of how easy it is to get RAM that just doesn't work right with a specific motherboard.  A lot of "random" performance issues that you see on the forms end up being either heat related or memory related.

9/10 times when you venture outside the QVL list, the problems you might have are minimal at best.  Like the sticks not performing at correct speeds or timings.  But 1/10 times you'll have problems like BSOD every few minutes, or system hangs ever few seconds, artifacts on the display or audio.

Since I want 64GB and I cant get a hold of the 2 sticks that are on the QVL list, I guess I just need to take my chances.

After all, each time I try 4k multi cam, so do I ether max out the cpu or the ram.
