The number one thing to do is PRACTICE and learn how to use manual right away. I'd go on EBay and buy the cheapest DSLR you can to learn the functions of the camera and how each one changes the photo. Something I always try and do is try and express an emotion through your photos, a great way of doing this is listening to some music with a strong message and shooting photos with emotions based on the music you're listening to. I'll post some photos down below showing you some of my stuff. (I've been doing photography for about 6 years now).

Also worth mentioning what I shoot and edit with.

My camera setup contains:

  • Nikon D3200
  • Nikon 15-55mm Kit Lens
  • Nikkor 55-300mm Zoom Lens
  • Nikon 50mm f1.8 Prime Lens
  • Nikon 18-35mm Kit Lens

I edit using:

  • Adobe Photoshop CC 2016
  • Adobe Lightroom CC 2016

Learn to use Lightroom and it'll be your favorite piece of software ever.

You can just message me :) A bit easier than throwing out a bunch of sources.

Best ways to start

  • Take courses on photography (see if local schools or professional togs offer courses)
  • Join a photography club
  • Do a bit of research and figure out which "starter" camera you should buy
  • Study the various technical aspects of photography
  • Try out various techniques and experiment

-Practice. Go to any classes you can, possibly see about being an apprentice, watch tons of videos and read lots of how toos. Don't be afraid to ask questions

-Don't get GAS (Gear acquisition syndrome.) While this is almost unavoidable, try not to go overboard. The hardest challenge to a photographer is learning how to frame a shot and learn how to use camera settings. If you can find a good person to be an apprentice with, they could even supply you with gear.

The hardest to avoid, the only sure way to avoid this is to be broke. :D

@OP, you can also check the links in my signature where I have collected quite a lot of resources.

T3i or Die.

Great starter DSLR. A little old but it keeps up decently for today. One with a kit lens can be had for a bout $399 new, probably even better deals at local store or in your classified ads.

I have had mine for about 5 years now. I still use it all the time.
