Hey, this is my first post on a forum ever, and I've decided on this because I am having some issues with my new computer that I have been building, and I am fairly nooby when it comes to this stuff. My new EVGA 500W PSU arrived today along with my Intel Q6600 2.4ghz Quad Core and I was trying to run a test to see if I could post. With the new processor installed along with the PSU, the power button stayed orange and I would have to hold it for a while to turn it off (It didn't post). I switched to another CPU which I know works, and tried running a post test without putting the heatsink on it, as I figured I wouldnt need to install the heatsink for a simple post test but it encountered a heat problem and shut off 4 seconds into the BIOS screen. If anyone responds to help me, I'll give more details if you need them. Thank you.

Did you seat the intel cpu in the socket correctly?

I did, but then the computer powered on for only a second, and shut down.

Orange light generally can mean an cpu issue. Did you get the cpu new or used? Also, if there are any beeps, how many are there?

I did for the first time testing new processor, but on the rest of the tests I did not, because I am running quite low.

the heatsing is worthless with out it and it will just heat up and shut off. and doing it excessively can damage  your CPU

Unplug your pc and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and try it. Also, is your cpu fan plugged in?

I tried that just now, and it did not seem to change anything. My cpu fan is plugged in.

It is usually in big text under the 1st PCIe slot or next to the ram and the CPU socket.

Oh man, I think I did my research wrong and found out what kinds of processors would fit in the socket rather than what the motherboard supports?

It turns out that my chipset doesn't support any quad cores on the market. I didn't even know about chipset and that I should have even researched it. Thanks for the help guys! :D

I will be returning the Q6600 and picking up the best quad core I can find that'll work for me.
