Hey Guys,

I am planning to upgrade my PC and at the end of August or September I will have the budget for it.

At the Moment I have an AMD FX 9370 and a GTX 970 I want to upgrade to a GTX 1080, but I am afraid the amd Processor will be bottelneck the build. (I think it is a bottleneck already) and this is why i am thinking about getting an i7 4790k befor getting a new gpu.

The only thing I am using my PC for besides browsing the web is playing Black Desert Online and I want to play the new mirrors edge too.  I won't have the budget for both until January 2017. What I am also concerned about is if I get a 1080 in September maybe a better GPU will come out until January. What do you think? Should I get the CPU first and have the big performance boost in 2017 or should I get the GPU first because the chances of nvidia releasing a better GPU until 2017 are very slim.

Thanks for your help :)

i5 6600K or i7 6700k would do the trick for your needs.

I never considered getting a 5th or 6th generation processor because of the not that affordable DDR4 but I'll consider it :) thanks for the tip I'll see if I can squeeze drr4 in my budget

I've convinced a lot of my friends to change from their AMD CPUs to Intel, instead of having them upgrade their GPU. Most of them are using either an i5-4690 or a 4690K. None of them use their CPU for production level stuff, so I simply can't recommend an i7. I suggested that generation just because they wouldn't have to buy into DDR4.

ddr4 is cheap as hell now anyway.. I'd go for the newer platform for NVME support and usb3.1 alone.

As far as the games, performance and bottlenecks.. Basically you gotta test that stuff yourself.

What I would do is test and see if there is a bottleneck in what you currently play.. if yes, make the change, if no.. don't

Games that havn't been released.. well unless you have access to the game your not going to know what you need to get the performance you want..

Also, running a 1080 for 1080 is just a waste unless your using super res or whatever it's called (rendering in higher res and down-scaling it)

I know it's nice to crank all the settings but really minimum 60fps with everything cranked is just not worth it on 1080. and especially if it's not a high refresh rate / ips or something above a basic tn panel, that would be the first investment I would make.

But then thats just me. :) But maybe worth thinking about.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

Im in a similar spot currently with a FX 8350 and GTX 770, The end game is to have a 6600k and 1070, could either buy them separately or wait and buy them both at the same time. What one to buy first though. I often play AAA titles as they come and go, my go tos are rocket league and CSGO and more recently Overwatch, so the power will mainly be for the AAAs although i would like high fps in CSGO as it does sit around 150 fps and lows at below 100 fps and the aim would be to have it consistent 200ish, also ofc i would be taking advantage of my 144hz monitor in games like Overwatch.

Also what kind of performance increase do you see with DDR4 vs DDR3?

Processor: Ryzen 5950x GPU: RTX 3080  Mobo: X570 Aorus Pro RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

A friend of mine has a i7 4790k and and another friend has an i7 6700k and because they are so happy with their i7's they recommended them to me and this is why i wanted to go with an i7. Also i have Photoshop and After effects but i don't use them, but i am thinking about getting into it in the next few years (and i want the pc i am building in the next month to work for a couple years) i want to go with an i7, so i don't have to upgrade later. And since DDR4 is as cheap as DDR3 in germany (50Euro for 16GB) i can afford it and it "future proofes" my pc better than DDR3 so i'll go with an i7 6700k. And since the time span between september an january is so short, i'll probably follow your suggestion and upgrade my cpu first.

I talked to a friend who has the same gpu as me, but an i7 4790k and he gets more frames than me in every single game we tested (bdo, csgo, skyrim and gtaV) so my cpu is already a bottleneck if just a slight. So i will get definitely a intel cpu.

I chose the 10x0 generation because it is cheap for what they do, i like the new software implementation like the high res screenshot thingy and i want to show that we want gddr5x so that they work harder on improving it. Also as i said earlier i want to get into photoshop and after effects in a few years, when i have 2 4k monitors so there will be a use for the 1080 and i will maybe even have to get a second one. And of course it's an prestige item.

Just for csgo a gtx 970 would do it probably i think i had around 200 fps with my current build but i am not that sure anymore.

I heard that DDR4 doesn't have that great performance impact, but other nice features.

So thank you all again. I am pretty sure now that i will get an i7 6700k first and a gtx 1080 later.

The one thing to remember is that the more you spend now on performance you won't use is that you have to wait longer for an upgrade.

If your thinking of photoshop and 4k in 2 years, wait 2 years and spend the savings from a 1080 to 480 on a new card then and you will be better off in the long run.

Thats to say.. $600 now vs 200. Save the 400 and then get a 400 gpu when you have the monitors which will be better than a 1080 by quite some margin.

If you were definitely going to do allot of editing and get 4k screens in say the next year, id say get the i7 and 1080.. but in 2 years time tech will have moved on hugely AND an i5 is more than capable for beginner in editing.

DDR4 vs DDR3, most situations, no noticeable difference. BUT DDR3 will reduce in production and DDR4 will stay the same / increase as more platforms move to it. So from future-proofing DDR4 will be easier to get and cheaper.

If you still want to go for the i7 and 1080, thats fine.. just consider all the down sides along with ohh shiney :)
