I am going to build my first PC, with a strict $500.

I know that I need to start by choosing a CPU, but I do not know which to choose.

I use the programs League of Legends on high settings, Open Broadcast Software (OBS), & Sony Vegas Pro.

I am going to be building in a Mid Tower, so space shouldn't be an issue, and I plan to use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

The problem with TAX mid towers for a budget buil is the mobo's are often $50 more. That's a 10th of your budget, just because you wanted a bigger size which has no benefits.

For budget, mATX is best

I'm going with a mid tower because I'm using an old one that I got for free.

I'm kind of overwhelmed by the entire builds posted; I was just looking for the CPU to use.

Nevertheless, thanks for all of the helpful replies.

Do you have an existing PC? If yes, its specs please.

Looks like your workloads are more CPU heavy than GPU heavy.

Alright, this should be a good build for your use cases, and leave room (in PSU wattage) for future upgrades.

Recommending a Micro-ATX motherboard because they are significantly cheaper than ATX variants. They will fit into bigger cases no problem.

I was comparing the i5 6500 and the i5 4460. They both have the same frequency and # of cores. The only difference seems the be that the 4460 requires more watts, but is cheaper. Since there will be extra watts, would it be advisable to get the 4460 to save money?

Also, the Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard only take DDR3 memory.

If it saves you money, then definitely. Haswell and Skylake are pretty much identical in performance, and the two we are comparing have exactly the same base clocks. So yeah, good find! ;)

Wattage isn't really important in mainstream CPUs. 84W is nothing for a 300W or above PSU, and cooling it should be a breeze for any aftermarket cooler.

the i5 6500 is running a newer architecture, with a 10% increase in ipc over the i5 4460, but you shouldn't see too much of a difference. if its not too much of a difference, get the 6500 instead.
