It depends.

 

For instance if you had to pick between a 120hz 1280x1024 monitor or a 60hz 1920x1080 monitor, I'd pick the 1080p monitor.

But if it was a 60z 1440p monitor vs a 144hz 1080p one, that would be a harder decision.

But if I could afford one I would just buy an ultrawide.

Resolution all day everyday. Sure smooth looks nice but 4K or 1440p is way better then higher refresh rates. It makes you want to just stop and stare at it

HD Ready TN @ 240Hz... yup, a "no go" as well.
So it's really pointless.

I won't go below the resolution of my monitor, whatever that happens to be, nor will I go below 60 fps, but as long as those are both achieved, the higher the settings, the better :)

As almost always, balance is the best. 60 or 75 FPS stable if without adaptive sync technology and 50-75 range with adaptive sync technology, and all of this with image quality/resolution cranked up as high as possible. I wouldn't sacrifice image quality just to get very high FPS and I wouldn't sacrifice performance to get higher quality image, so I choose balanced option, 60 FPS and especially 75 FPS is smooth enough and possible to achieve with very high settings and great image quality without issues.

I prefer looks over fps but since I don't play FP Shooters my views could be skewed but that's my feeling on my system right now.
