pfSense Box Suitability

Jackpot17

I have been looking at this on eBay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131843090024?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm from the UK this would cost around 40 dollars US

Would it be suitable for running a pfSense router?

I know it may be a little overpowered and it will use a lot of power (but it's cheap and I want to mess around with pfSense)

Would there be any drawbacks other than the ones mentioned?

pfSense can run on only a USB stick right?

Many thanks.

i dont think i would put pfsense on that due to hardware and also electricity cost  ( not cheap in that way ). I would use a custom pc or a routerboard :)

It's gonna be really loud. Like really.

And it's a bit old so compatibility isn't to be great with some hardware. And you can't fit expansion cards in it.

I'm not worried about noise as it will live in my loft.

Compatibilty, however, may be an issue.

The electricity is not an issue.

Old hardware may be an issue.

I couldn't build a custom system for this below 50 pounds realistically.

at that price i think you should not build a pfsense box :) , it would not run as it could. If you need for a real application than invest a little bit more around 100-130 puond and you have a beast as a router. If you have old hardware or pc you can start from there. If you just want to play around virtual machine is the way :)

PFSense should be compatable with that server. It pretty much runs on anything, as it uses freebsd. Like others have said though, noise and electricity usage will be high. For energy prices of even 10c/kwh, you are probably looking at at least $50/month spent just for that server.

My native language is C++
