People actually said no?

'ghetto' cooling is the best kind of cooling.

You can always replace the stock fans if it doesn't work out.

Make sure you post pics!

Look at my systems:

Spoiler

My main testing/gaming system "Bitlo" is an upgraded HP Pavilion p6710f:

AMD Athlon II X4 640 undervolted to 1.225v vcore @3.00GHz, with additional undevolts for each P-state.

Stock AMD cooler- with the undervolt that's all I actually need

8GB PNY DDR3

Zotac GTX 560 Ti, 880MHz core & 2360MHz mem at stock voltage, has been delidded and repasted, plan on strapping an AIO on to overcome current temp issues

EVGA 500W PSU

120GB Toshiba Q300 SSD

1TB Seagate HDD

Every day carry: Toshiba Satellite L655-S5150. Pentium P6200 @2.13GHz, 4GB RAM.

Black themed workstation I'm working on:

Xeon E5-2670 (SR0KX)

Cooler Master Hyper T4

ASRock X79 Extreme4

16GB (2x8) Adata XPG DDR3

Gigabyte R9 290 OC Edition

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

Dell XPS 630i 750W PSU

What fans would you reccommend using? Are the nf-f12 ippc best for this?

They aren't a bad option- a bit expensive for my taste but certainly effective.

Which 390 is it? Is it a stock cooler or does it have the Windforce?

Generally you'd want a high static pressure fan like the NF-F12s, as you're blowing down into a heatsink and the air has to turn 90º to exit it- lots of resistance. I would suggest rigging some kind of ducting around the fans and heatsink to direct airflow the way you want it. The 390 puts out a lot of heat so assuming you started with a stock cooler you could preserve the rear-exhaust attributes with sufficient ducting.

Also, if you're comfortable with water cooling & have room in your case, the $45 you'd spend on two iPPC NF-F12s would probably be enough to buy a used 120mm AIO water cooler and RAM heatsinks instead. The Red Mod, as ziptying an AIO on an AMD GPU is known on the internet, isn't as new or novel as this, but it might be more effective.

Look on ebay for 120mm all in one coolers. You don't really need a bracket for them either, you can just use zip ties. Something like the H50 or H75, or you could even go 240mm if it'll fit in your case. American ebay has a few good options in your price range with minimal searching effort.

If you have the windforce card, and the cooler still works, that explains why some people may have voted no- the windforce cooler is already very good and pretty quiet, so it might not be worth the effort.

By ducting, I meant adding material to direct the airflow around the heatsink- like the plastic shroud does on many graphics cards. It keeps air flowing across important areas instead of letting it dissipate around the edges. If you've ever seen the plastic shroud inside an original Xbox 360 you'll know what I mean.

Have you tried replacing the thermal paste? That might help a lot. I would see about going for a water cooled solution otherwise- if the windforce cooler isn't giving you temps you like, switching to different fans won't change the temperatures too drastically. If you aren't comfortable using zip-ties to mount an all-in-one cooler, you can always use a bracket like the NZXT Kraken or the Corsair HG10.

Its a new card, shouldnt have thermal paste problems, you mean like get a H60 and put the block on the heatsink?

Remember to buy VRM radiators so you don't fry the power delivery system, which btw is cooled very poorly or not at all by the crappy Gigabyte cooler.

Yeah, okay, figured. You can just use zip ties. And like @Morgan MLGman said, you should definitely add heatsinks to the RAM and the VRMs to cool them if you watercool it. There's a couple great forum threads over on Overclock.net detailing the process and compiling build logs, they've been doing it for years. The Mod and The Red Mod

I hadn't known the newer Windforce cooler on the 390s was bad- the Windforce cooler on my Gigabyte R9 290 is excellent.

If you put a CPU AIO like the CM Seidon 120V on a GPU, you HAVE to get those heatsinks. They're cheap though.

It should look something like that, with the AIO cooler on the GPU itself: 2nun8gj.jpg
