PCI-E Lanes

Hello All,

 

I am in the process of building my own PC and i have been getting different opinions on my next question. I hope that people here can help me find out if i am making a huge mistake or not.

 

I have used PCPARTPICKER.com to pick parts that i want and at the bottom of the website i get the warning message

 

"The motherboard M.2 slot #0 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6Gb/s ports are disabled."

 

When i research PCI-E Lanes i find out that my chip set has x16. If my Video card is using 16x and this is sharing the bandwidth with my M2 or any other expansion cards that i add at a later date. Will this effect the speed of any of my devices?

 

Parts:

 

Intel Core i7-6700k 4.0GHZ

Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

GTX 1080 video card

 

I'm hoping this makes sense.

The processor has 16 PCI Express lanes dedicated to the video card(s). The rest of the peripherals have 20 lanes split among themselves and connect to the processor via another path. If you use an NMVe based SSD it just means it disables two of the SATA 6Gbps ports and does not affect anything else.

Even if the M.2 drive pulled from the dedicated PCIe lanes you would still be fine since x16 or x8 for video cards makes virtually no difference in performance.

So correct me if i'm wrong i have dedicated x16 for GPU and x20 for peripherals for example the m2 and extra NIC cards ect?
