Bandwidth Control?

I have an issue in my country with internet, I have 40mb/s which translates to 5mbps download and 0.625mbps upload.

Once I upload something and it goes over 0.3125mbps everyone on my network starts lagging, ISP's being a bitch(pardon my french).

So my dad's playing World of Tanks and he had to go and play on the Russian servers(which have way shittier connection for us), resulting in that even when I have dropbox syncing on the lowest speed of 50kbps he has lags.

 

My question is if I manually assign on the Bandwidth control panel to his rig get a minimum of 50% of total speed(up/down) and no limit on max would it potentially help shut him up with those damn lags and let me use dropbox in peace?

No. The lag is about ping and not really about bandwidth (usually). In your case the upload is bare minimum for gameplay.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Thing is his ping spikes when upload is in play, once there's no serious upload his ping drops down..

Wonder if QoS might help..

QoS will probably help a little. But uploading destroys networks no matter how you set them up

Thing is even if I limit the a certain application to use 50kbps that runs constantly he comes in and rants about lag, once I shut it off his ping goes back to normal.

Seriously considering to check out DD-WRT as it supports the router I have, to see if some of the feature it provides could help me improve my network..

This is most definitely a thing and QoS should help. Think of your network connection as like the entrance to a toll road or something. The more traffic that wants to use the connection the longer your traffic is going to wait in the queue. QoS is kind of like a priority system. Your gaming packets effectively get put at the front of the queue everytime they line up if you have QoS setup

Thanks, will try QoS and will take a look into DD-WRT documentation if that might improve the performance of my router.

I love DD-WRT and I have been using it for years on my WRT54G. It allows for vast amounts of tinkering and control. It really unlocks the true potential. I also really like PFsense, has better support for larger businesses and many clients. I would try QoS or you could set a times upload for whatever you are doing

I'd like to know if it's as easy to return to factory as it's to install DD-WRT?

So the run down on installing DDR WRT. It is pretty similar for each router. Perform a 30/30/30 reset plug it into your PC, select the .bin file, flash it to the router, perform another 30/30/30 reset and you will be able to connect to it at 192.168.0.1 or whatever you have it at. Just don't interrupt it when you are flashing it. As I did and I managed to but recovering a router with a bad flash is very hard. Had to have my electrical engineer dad help me

I agree, I have a TP-Link WR1043ND Rev 1.0 (if I remember the rev correctly, not at home)

Me and my dad spoke about getting a Linux based router but it's a bit pricey for us so this might be a better solution..

So going to suggest to my dad to install DD-WRT and try that..
