Upgrading RAM question

Go to solution Solved by Alexcalibur,

You normally would prefer same speed ram, but if that isn't a possibility then the higher speed ram should just down clock to the slower speed. But I haven't had any problems using different sets

So i have a MSI B85-G43 motherboard. it has 4 slots for RAM for a maximum RAM capacity of 32GB of DDR3. currently i have a stick of 8GB 1600Mhz memory. i want to add another stick 8GB for a total of 16GB. now i sometimes stubble upon some posts saying that there's a chance that adding another stick to achive dual channel will cause problems if their not coming from the same pack. The stick that im going to buy is the same brand, same speed and even the same product code/series. will i have problems ?

ideally you want ram tested to run in dual channel, should work. Mileage may vary.

if its an identical stick it should work just fine

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

everything SHOULD work fine. Theres not really any way (as far as I understand) to confirm then before you plug it in and try though. make sure it has the same operating frequency and timings. Best way to make sure its the most compatible is try to buy the same model of ram that you currently have.

Depending on your budget, if you're really paranoid about this you could always sell the 1 stick you have and buy a new 2x8 kit of ram just to be safe. New ram is probably the cheapest component you could buy. then you could sell your 1 stick to make up the cost, or keep it around if you feel you need to.
