I think I messed up when building my relatively cheap PC, I brought the ASUS AM1M-A or AM1I-A - not much difference and i don't remember what one it was but, I brought that with the AMD Athlon 5350 - mostly for that, but, now I'm looking into it, I can't upgrade my processor without upgrading my motherboard.

Did I mess up?

Any tips?

No, you most likely didn't mess up. That's pretty normal for AMD hardware. That's why I switched to Intel!

So I'll just  have to get a new mobo and cpu whenever I can/want to upgrade? that sucks, looking into it it seems only like 3 processors are AM1 socket and then it was ditched by AMD. That really sucks and makes upgrading more effort and costly.

Yep! I had that same issue when I was a beginner. I just switched to Intel today since there is more comparability with Intel rather than AMD.

I went for this mobo and processor because they were the cheapest/most cost-efficient available to me at the price range that I was going for without other trade-offs. I'm not particularly a beginner, I'm not a beginner at OCing - managed to get 16Hz extra out of a bad LG TV and everything :^) but for the build it was centered around cheapness. it just sucks that there aren't ANY upgrade options without replacing mobo as well/
