So im planning a build for my friend , his prebuilt system currently is running a i5-2320 and a HD 6950 , he plays mainly LoL , Overwatch and some ark ( low graphics are ok for ark) . But im not too sure what gpu to upgrade to . i have asked him to wait for the RX 480 , but holidays are ending soon and he wants to play as much as possible :/. If you know of any gpu that can work well please leave it down in the comments and thanks for viewing !! :D

If he can't wait for the RX 480 (he really should), get the R9 380. Outperforms the GTX 960 by a decent margin and you can usually get it for cheaper.

Also, 2GB is not enough for today's standards. You can get a R9 380 4GB for the same price as the GTX 960 2GB. IMO, the GTX 960 is card that shouldn't be recommended unless you're running a weak CPU (which your friend is not).

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Spoiler

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K - 4.5 GHz | Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 | SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB | GPU: MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB | PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 | Case: NZXT Phantom 530 | Cooling: CRYORIG R1 Ultimate | Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Peripherals: Corsair Vengeance K70 and Razer DeathAdder

we're thinking about $250+ USD . running games at near max settings except for ark at 1080p

I would get an EVGA GTX 970. Here is one for $300. I wouldn't bother with the rebate, it'll make the Step Up to a 1070 a real pain in the ass.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487088

Then register it with EVGA within 14 days of purchase. Then pay $100 more to step up to an EVGA GTX 1070 in two to three weeks. You have to register it within 14 days to be eligible for the Step Up promotion, which allows you to get another card within 90 days in exchange for your current one, and you pay the difference in price. This is the only way to have your cake and eat it too. You get the GTX 970 to game on for 2-3 weeks and then you get the bad motherfucker GTX 1070 once it's in stock for the Step Up.

hey sorry for replying this late LOL but why would rebate make the step up to a 1070 a pain in the ass?

Rebates usually take a couple of months to process. Besides, it would be worthless since it would count against the value of the Step Up.

But there is no $250 card currently out that's worth buying.

Say whaaaat? A 390 is a beast of a card.

OP, get a 390. Same performance and memory as a RX 480. Just bigger and less efficient.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Where are you getting a decent 390 for $250? I just looked at newegg and you can get a VisionTek or Gigabyte crap one for $250-$260, but the good ones (MSI, Sapphire, XFX, PowerColor PCS) start at $290. I have heard so many bad things about that Gigabyte 390 so I can't recommend it.

Used they're everywhere. Some sub 200 for a Nitro. But Newegg just had a sale on the MSI for 250. Just have to keep watching.
