My google chrome text looks different this past week. I'm not sure how this has happened.

This is because you disable ClearType in Windows.

Thank you that sorted it but why was cleartype disabled?

Many reason. You might have run a software that disabled it, some system tweak tool that did something you said it to do, or maybe buggy and did stuff it should not, some poorly made game you ran might disable it, and forgets to undo it (or doesn't, but it crashed at some point, so could not return the setting back). Just guesses.
