gpu usage dropping

Go to solution Solved by elago,

If the CPU is always at a 100% then it must be a bottleneck. The CPU should be at around 30%, 50%-60% for intensive games.

If it's at a 100% it's holding back your graphics card.

Another possibility is running out of VRAM, you've only got 2 gigs and GTA loves it.

So i was playing gta v and had wierd ass lag spickes.

these lag spices tend to start at about 5-10 minutes into playing and continue.

so i pulled up the thing that you can see usages at.

my cpu was running all the time at 100% and when the lag spickes start the gpu usage drops to 20 form 100%

i have this problem only in gta v.

My pc:
Asus gtx 770 2 gigabytes
amd phenom 2 X4 965 black edition
8 gigs of hyper x ram.
windows 10 64 bit

Maybe CPU bottlenecking, GTA V is CPU intensive.

If not, it could be your PSU, but show us your CPU usage in Afterburner.

i dont think my cpu is bottlenecking.

it is 100% all the time as gpu is and no lag in other games.

but can the cpu bottleneck if both are 100%? im still a noob

770 has 2GB of Vram. Sounds like a VRAM limitation. If you get over that 2GB threshold by even a small amount you're going to see MASSIVE amounts of fps loss, until you lower that vram amount, in which case the gpu will run normally again. . Also, if your CPU is always pinned to 100%, you're dangerously close to beginning to bottle necking your GPU. the more time your CPU has to spend doing CPU based things, the less time it has to help your GPU with GPU based things. not that this is a huge deal, if your GPU runs at 90% instead of 100% its not the end of the world (heck you probably wouldn't even notice the difference) but it is something to keep in mind.
