my gtx 580 crashed today giving white squares just before freezing up after about 10 sec. the fan starts going like crazy,

i can run anything that doesnt require the gpu (i can run my desctop and google chrome. but when i startup a game i get the same problem stated above. i figured its my nvidia gtx 580 that causes it so i want to replace it with a newer (possibly more power full) is there a site where i can buy them in the eu, and is there a place where i can check if it actually goes with what i already have (the graphics card was over 4-5 years old so i am not too sad about it).

Before rushing on buying a new card, let's try and fix the old one.

For starters, did you OC? If so, try using the card at stock. If you are already doing that, try to underclock it a little; -50mhz on the core and -100 on the memmory. See if that helps.

Since this card is pretty old and it behaved as you described (with the fans really ramping up) I'd suggest removing the cooler, cleaning it out, and reapplying some new thermal paste as it sounds like it may be overheating.

If you haven't already I'd install MSI Afterburner and tell us what core temps you're seeing and we'll be able to help more based on that information.

If we get the card working, then it could at the very least be sold to get some extra cash to invest in the upgrade. Or just cure OP's itch for a new product (let's face, if it takes a failure to sparkle the desire for an upgrade, chances are he doesn't really need it).

2nd this motion.

That card is notorious for releasing heat and if you've had it that long, it's probably overdue for a reapplication of thermal material.  Changing out the TIM could be the difference between life and death for the card.

i didn't overclock and i will look into checking the temperatures but in the mean time i have looked into other graphics cards namely the  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card  which should be compatible with my motherboard,

on the matter of it being summer it is but its only at 20 degree's c inside temperature but i am not sure if its worth checking the thermal compound as i am not sure about my ability's with pulling it apart and putting it back together again. and if you let that get done at a shop you spend mony and the shops in my area dont offer a no-que no-pay. so there is that to consider as well

You'll be fine replacing the the thermal material yourself.  It always seems scary the first time, but there's not much to worry about besides overtightening the screws around the die when you put the cooler back on.

970 is a solid card though.
